Hi, Install new muffler on onan 2800 microlite after reinstalling into rig had a jam flywheel, so I lower the unit cranked by hand to free up. It then ran without making power. Moved some wires around checking this and that. Started up making power , had tv on, started a\c and stalled the genset. Now it will only run while holding start button down. It has done this before in the past but always started to work again. Switch to new control board no help, check ground connect ok. Any ideaers? was rhinking of voltage regulator?

Im wondering if you have a service manual for this unit, and the necessary test equipment to work on it.
When starting this unit, it will not stay running when you release the push to start button, unless its producing the correct voltage and frequency of AC power.
I dont understand the "moved some wires around" part, but if all is well, and the main breaker in the generator is tripped, it will act like you described.
Before you started the AC what was the output voltage and frequency?

This is symptomatic of a bad ground on the house battery. Try this. Turn the ignition key to the run position. If the generator will then start and run normally, you probably have a bad ground. Clean both ends of the ground cable (or replace it), clean the negative terminal, and the point at which the negative cable connects to the frame/chassis. Good luck.

I had the same problem. It would run while holding the start button but wasn't making power. I put a new brush kit in mine. Haven't had the problem since.

Read that the brushes should last somewhere around 2000 hrs? I only have 820 hrs on unit. Does anyone know where to get a good repair manual?

The best repair manual is from Onan, for $25. Just Google them, get there phone number and give them a call. What you want is a service/repair manual, for your mod unit, you might have the Ser# handy when you call just in case.
You can get a Volt Ohm meter all most at any Hwd store, or sears tools, from $20. up, and it will come with a book on how to use it for basic things. But it wont reed frequency, those meters are costly, mine was several hundred. If you had an old electric plug in clock it will work, just PM me, and ill explain.
The 4KW Onan has whats called slip rings for brushes, and normally they will last several thousands of hours, and having only 800 hrs is nothing, 4 or 5K is getting up there.
Have you made sure the circuit breaker at the generator is reset? And next to it is a red LED, is it flashing? If so count the number of flashes, it repeats its flashing with a short brake. There manual explains all of this.
