We were there a couple of years ago and many parking lots at trail heads had signs warning of leaving your vehicle unattended because it was a "high crime area". Signs were put up by the National Park service. We also spoke to the owner of a large motor home who was camping in one of the campgrounds and returned to his motor home after a day of exploring to find his sofa and recliner had been stolen. WE certainly didn't get the idea that is was a safe place so we left the next day. I didn't feel unsafe but I sure felt my property was in danger.

Now Skip, you know as well as I that the Illegals probably did not steal the mans sofa and recliner. I seriously doubt that the illegals, after having just crossed the river, decided to haul a recliner and sofa on their backs for their long trip through the desert.

This sounds like another rver or "camper" wanted the mans sofa to me.

Am I missing something here? Where did skipnchar mention anything about illegals?

We've been visiting BB the past 15 years every year. We've camped all over the park along the River Rd and other back country spots. We've never had any issues. We do carry, as we would in any back country situation. I do consider this to be an extremely safe park as it is in a very desolate location from both sides of the border. Just my own opinion. Enjoy.

Safety on this section of the border - it wasn't a problem when we were there. Not many illegals cross the river there because it is 60 miles to food and water and there are places to cross closer to civilization. As far as thieves breaking into your car, it can happen in any park in any state, and the perpetrator can be any nationality. Keep no valuables in your car and keep the doors locked.

when I was there, at one location opposite a small Mexican town, the locals would come over in a boat and take you over to shop. I think the ride over was free. Oh, you want to go back? that will cost you.

Worse thing we saw when we were there was the vultures who are the camp critters. Having a pack of bickering and vomiting buzzards sitting on top of your camp shelter when you are trying to eat lunch is a bit distasteful. I much prefer chipmunks.

We didn't see any vendors across the river but we were there in July which was stupid in itself.

Last I checked, you no longer can cross the river to the hamlets on the other side without being exposed to a fine of what I've heard to be $5,000, if you're caught. The flip side is Mexicans caught crossing in BB are deported back through an official crossing, such as Presidio.

It is sad that the border is not as relaxed in BB as it used to be. It was quite a pleasure to gain transport across the river on a hot afternoon to have a cold libation and a meal at their restaurants. All is changed now. I doubt if any tourist traps exist anymore on the Mexico side of BB.
