We are scheduled to go camping with a group in a week or so. However, I'm thinking of cancelling due to...
10 yrs old son was playing indoor tag hide & go seek at home 2 evenings ago. While running through a doorway, he stubbed his little toe in the doorjam and split open the top of it. I did first aid and kept his foot elevated all night, but the next morning it was a little swollen and discolored. Took him to the Dr and after x-rays, he has a fractured toe that needs to be wrapped w/ace bandage for 4-5 weeks and the split/cut on his toe will take abou 5-7 days to heal. Dr said to use a stiff-soled shoe a bit bigger than normal and that he should be fine to go camping.
He's doing well and the toe is healing well and the swelling & discoloration are going down. I'm just afraid of taking him as we tend to be very active and don't want him sitting on the sidelines, especially when it comes to swimming.
As a Mom, I'm thinking it just best for him not to go, but as an avid camper, I was really looking forward to the trip and now to cancel! Has anyone been through this kind of injury? Do you think I should hold off and wait for fall camping?
It is good to realize that if love and peace can prevail on earth, and if we can teach our children to honor nature's gifts, the joys and beauties of the outdoors will be here forever.

What does he want to do? Is he willing to sit out of swiming? I would go if he is willing.
Have a great time camping,
Terry

Which would disappoint him more? To stay home or go camping and not swim? Why not ask him? Our family would go and maybe none of us swim and instead, figure out something else to do.

I don't know, When I was young and foolish, I did a lot weird things, some a lot worse then your son. I mean blowing a small finger off my right hand, I even broke my big toe trying kick a red head, missed and hit a piano leg, the piano won. I've had more stitches the most.
First off One week from now, his toe will pretty well closed. If he's going into salt water, the better for healing. Him sitting around all day after a few days will get kind of boring. No way would I cancel. He'll do what he feels he can handle. The more he does the better he'll heel. The days of staying in bed two months for a broken leg were over years ago. He might be down now, but in a few days, he'll be climbing the trees again. Go. Bill
Disclaimer, I'm not a nurse, my wife is. But My mom would never let use sit there and lick are wounds for long.

Why not just ask him what he would like to do. He may feel very guilty and upset if the trip is cancelled because of him. I have 5 boys and I know they would 'tough it out' given a similar circumstance

I have broken several toes over the years and my children did also. The broken toes did not stop us from doing anything.
And I take that back, I made our son wear old shoes in swimming. No sandals.

Don't sissy the kid. It's a broken toe, not a broken neck. I remember when I broke two fingers back in freshman football. (wow, I actually remember back that far) I probably did everything I shouldn't and loved it. My mom wanted to sissy me, (that's how moms are), but my dad stepped in and I'm glad to this day he did.
Don't cancel. Go have fun and let him be a kid. He'll know how far he can push himself, believe me.

One thing about this type of minor injury is that recovery will come faster than a doc would say, and the injured will self-protect or it will hurt! The other toes will keep the injured one in line anyhow.
Tape it and set the kid free. Bail out of a trip for a stubbed toe? LOL

To set the record straight...I'm not a sissy or sissifier! lol Well, I'm squimish though. Always had to step out of the vets office when dog needed shots.
Seriously, the toe is literally tore in half on the top going under the nail bed, so I was more worried about going lake swimming and having to contend with some wierd bacterial infection of which I had read a couple of articles about over the summer in Texas lakes.
I try not to baby him either, but he loves playing sports (flag football right now) and I was worried of aggrevating the injury over a camping trip that is not as important as having him not have future toe issues.
Did I defend myself well enough?

C'mon now. The kid needs some kind of story to tell when he gets older.
