GO Camping, a broken damaged toe is no big deal,he will find something to do even if he doesnt go swimming, if he goes in the water and comes back out put a clean dry banadge on it.i went camping when i was a kid with a broken hand and a cast up to my elbow and used the cast to pound in tent stakes.he will do fine.let him limit himself to what he wants to do if its painfull just keep the injury clean and covered.

What would you do if on the first night of camping this happened?
Personally if the injured party is in no real health danger, go camping and have fun.
Why make the rest of the family suffer through the pain also.
I have been injured on the eve of leaving, and as long as I could safely drive there, we went.

We had our big trip planned last year. DD 13 made that trip with her arm in a cast.
Swimming was not as hard...because my cousin sent us a cast boot cover, that she had used with her girls. After all they live in AZ and not swimming in the summer is just not an option. I realize that a broken arm is different from a toe. It is designed to keep all water out. So that would help keep the lake water out. Or get him an inflatable raft. He can float out and still have fun...better yet...get him a raft and some super soaker squirt guns.

I would just talk to him and see. Maybe compromise on the activities. Take shorter, easier hikes...or just allow extra time to rest. Bring some card and board games.

My 12 year old DS sprained his wrist at soccer camp this past Tuesday. He was in the goal when one of the counselors (college aged boy) kicked the ball and my DS put his arms up to block it and the force of the ball bent my DS's wrist backward (yes, he also blocked the goal He was back at camp the next day. He was the coach's assistant, helped to ref, and coached other kids in the goal. He took the splint off to take a quick dip in the pool and then would come out shortly after that. There was no way he was going to stay home and sit on the couch watching TV. He still had a great time. As for your son't toe, I broke a toe about 7 years ago. When we went on vacation, I taped it to the next toe and wore water shoes when I went swimming and when we went to a water park.

There is lots more fun to camping then just swimming and you could always put a large Zip Lock bag over his foot and tape it to keep water out if it would be a problem. Ask the doctor just to make sure about the swimming. There might be some other type of device he could put over the foot while swimming. Do you think the pioneers gave up going West due to a broken this or that?

another one to say just go! Just check with the doctor regarding swimming but even if he can't swim there's no reason he can't sit on the beach with a super soaker and play and have fun! I'm sure there's some way that you can keep the foot/toe dry - either a ziplock back or rubber something or other - the doctor would know.

We have a non-refundable trip that we made months ago. At over $400.00 I told the SO and kids that NO MATTER WHAT - even if they were sicker than sick - laying around a campground getting well beats the heck out of being at home and we were going - no matter what happened!

So far so good as we leave in 2 weeks....

He'll have a good time. Just clear with the doctor the lake swimming and possibly even by then the cut will have healed so there won't be anything open.

Son did the same thing but to his finger. Almost amputated the top section of it off getting it caught in a door/door jamb. Could not keep him down long at all - less than a week it was as if it never even happened. Kids are extremely resilient and very resourceful when it comes to having fun. He'll have a great time regardless.

Just a quick suggestion for foot gear for your son...

I recently banged up a small toe (broken or sprained??) and found that sandals that have straps around the ankle and a firm, heavy sole (like all-terrain or water sandals) worked best for me, and I just returned from a long camping trip.

I taped the injured toe to the neighbor toes using the fabric type of first aid tape. I couldn't wear a shoe because it created very painful pressure on the toe. Flip flops and other lightweight sandals aren't good because the sole is too flexible to be supportive. Good luck! Give us a report when you return from your camping trip. Yes--GO, and have fun!!!

Hey Don't Cancel.

We went camping for the July 4th holiday this year and I allowed my 13 year old son to bring a friend for the first time. Well, the friend broke his arm on a bike the night before we were due to leave. My first reaction was to tell the friend that he could go next time, but the boys had been planning for a month and were so excited. My husband said we should "uninvite" him and say better luck next year, but I just couldn't do it. He had to meet us later that day at the campground in order to get a cast the morning that we left. Well, we had a great time. He used a waterproof cover and even swam in the lake. I am so glad that we allowed him to go and the boys will have memories for a lifetime of inner tubing with a plastic cover over his cast. GO! GO! GO!

We've always been fortunate and been able to splint the toe with a popcicle stick, and sock the foot, maybe using crutches. Might be sore for a day or two, but not enough to stop life......so we go!
