Just wondering, has anyone gone up to the far north, Yellowknife in particular. I see that there is one campground listed but is there a drivable road up there.

Just thinking about future summer trip possibilities.

no, but I would love to make the trip, that would be great. I have seen, and this is on tv, that there is a good road all the way there. The only trick is having enough fuel to make some of the distances that there are in between the service locations

The road has been improved over the last few years, I was up there 10 years ago and it was dirt for the last few hundred Km, now I think it is paved. Even when it was dirt it was pretty good, it is a city with only one road in and out so they have to keep it in good shape. It is a great trip to do, if you go in Summer near the solstice you get 24 hours of daylight, I did and it was really neat! I stayed at a park called Fred Henne, it was a nice place.

BRING BUG SPRAY! and get smaller window screen, the little buggers can get through it and bite the hell out of you in your sleep!

So are there places to stop along that road? I assume it is a multiday drive.

Craig Nold sent me a hint to search on Google (Mackenzie Route to Yellowknife)

and I found this site:

Mackenzie Route to Yellowknife

It isn't as far as I was thinking, about 18 hours from Edmonton. Sounds like a real adventure tho. It's going on my list of trips to do.

I did the Fort Laird highway from northern BC as well as the road from Alberta...the Fort laird one (came back this way) was 2 days on gravel road, which at times is used for airstrip! The one from Alberta is all paved and the one I would do again with my TT. I can't explain the raw beauty of that part of the world...and the people are very friendly. I am going to do it again when my kids get older, so they can remember it.

The road to Yellowknife is paved all the way.
1000 miles from Edmonton to Yellowknife.
Going up through northern Alberta, there are many goverment campsites along the way.
Fuel is no problem. Fuel up at Ft Providence just after the free ferry across the Mackenzie river. Also a good big campground at Providence. I usually overnight there, an do a 4 hour run into YK from there. Watch out for buffalo on the highway from Providence on. Lots of them.
Fred Henne park is right across from the airport as you drive in to Yellowknife.
Big campground; great showers.
Mosquitos? Black flies? Deer flies?.........you betcha.

If the Ice Road Truckers (Season One) can get to Yellowknife from the south without any issues, surely a motorhome or fifth wheel can.

We did this trip in the summer of 2007 and had a wonderful time. Yellowknife was bigger than I was expecting. Most of the major chain stores are located there so stocking up was not a problem. Prices were better than I was expecting.

We had a really nice campsite located across from the beach at Fred Henne C.G. and spent 4 nights there while we enjoyed the city. Check out the diamond center in town. We took the Liard Hwy. on our way from Yellowknife to Whitehorse. There was a lot of gravel and dirt/sandy sections but the road was well maintained. Bugs can be bothersome - depends on where you are and when. Bug head nets are worth taking. Stop and view the many waterfalls along the way.
I agree with everything flaps said.
Go for it . . . . . .
