I've been camping at Pirateland since I was in high school. (Trust me... that was a loooooooooong time ago! ) Matter of fact, we are headed back next month for another week's stay.

There are people who love Ocean Lakes and won't go anywhere else. We did a drive through a few years ago to see if we'd be interested in staying there. For my taste, though, it's too big and too crowded. There are houses along the beach line, where at Pirateland there is open campsites and roads.

On a Myrtle Beach message board that I am a member of, one of the members wrote a recent review of Lakewood. They are Ocean Lakes campers and will not be going back to Lakewood.

I've noticed on trips through the campground when over at the rental villas and lake, you can see part of the camping area across the lake. To me, it just seems more crowded and I don't notice a lot of trees in that area.

For us... the size or Pirateland is more to our liking. The only other place that we're even thinking of trying out is Myrtle Beach Travel Park, but we love Pirateland so much that we just can't make ourselves stay anywhere else.

The next time you are down, try going to Ocean Lakes and Lakewood and asking if you can do a 'drive through' to check out their set up. Then you can decide for yourself if it is to your liking or not.

Happy Camping!

We have stayed at both Ocean Lakes and Lakewood. Either is wonderful. They both have their weak and strong points, but both are very nice. We enjoyed each one.

We stayed a week @ Pirateland last year. We hail from Mississippi and everyone thought we were crazy coming to N.C. when we have the sugar white beaches on gulf.
I thought so too but it is not my job to think. My job is to drive (safely) where DW says drive and set-up and break camp and whatever else crosses her dear mind.
