Nice investigation!
The portable fan/light draws 0.38 amps (380mA) on high according to my Trimetric 2020 meter, so 300mA is clearly too low a rating. All the 12v circuits are fused, but at much higher rates.
Is there a (say) 500mA replacement part for this critter? Since the little harness comes right out of the fan it'd be dirt simple to put a larger part in there and maintain the protection of the original.
I did notice the part was very warm and merely touching it with my fingers cooled it enough to start the fan running again. Only took one apart as the other ran without difficulty.

Looks like $6 for two of 'em.
Thanks, will probably give 'em a try.

This little project was already on DHs "to do" list. We've used the fan/lights almost the entire time we're camping and we're on our third season. Ours stops on low, rather than high speed. And while he's got it apart, it could really stand a little cleaning. Thanks for all the good info - it'll make his job easier.

Good to go on the new 1/2 amp fuse.
See Madbare's webshots.
