I hate to come in late on these threads especially when they are 7 pages old

Give me a break people, the rear axle on that truck is rated for around 10000 pounds... the tires are the weak link, brakes are the same as the 1 ton truck. GVW really does not apply to non commercial vehicles

Fix the tires and enjoy

A great reminder that sometimes we can get bad information on the net, and sometimes it can even get you hurt.

Mooney> He is talking about the axle rating of the same axle in a diff application. Its a valid argument.

Add some 19.5" rims and tires and a heavy duty rear spring pack and enjoy. Otherwise buy a F550 to make others happy.

Exactly!!!!

This has been an interesting thread, and I'd say the group (for a change?) has been remarkbly civil and on topic.

PS: For a little irony, I went out and bought a 17,500 GVWR truck, and I still ended up being overweight by about 750 pounds.

I cannot stand it when these topics that have the potential to turn into a wild animal attack, instead stay civil. WHY did you buy that big a truck BTGGRAPHIX??????? WHY??? Man you aint been listening to a word i say

OK Brad,

If the axle is the same on the SRW 2500/250 and the SRW 3500/350 and yet has a different rating on that little tag what may be the difference? and 3500 SRW.
So if I upgrade those components then I have effectively raised my rating - all I have to do is replace that little tag in the door.

You can change any parts you like, but you can't change the GAWR. The GAWR is established by the manufacturer, not the owner. Same is true of the GVWR. In either case, changing parts won't change the manufacturer's rating.

I support Flashman here Brad, It is reasonable to view the higher axle ratings of the same axle in a diff application as being a correct rating.

Finally i would like to quote Granny from the Beverly hillbillies. Once she was doing her doctoring and a real doctor approached her and said, "Madam do you practice medicine?" She said, "NO, I DO IT FOR REAL"
I DO IT FOR REAL AND SO DO ALOT OF OTHER PEOPLE.

Roll with that truck

I'm always listening to what you say JP...

Unlike many, my opinions on truck/camper sizes, weight/overweight etc., hasn't changed with the truck I own. I'll never be one of those people that goes from being overweight, to having a seriously huge truck and then tell everyone they must do the same as me. I was always overweight before, knew it, was as careful as I could be and tried to improve things where I could.....but made long-term plans to get out of the situation I was in. I wrote a treatise on why I wanted to get a big truck like a Kodiak way back when with my reasons, and they are are still the same. The biggest reason was probably to be able to carry or pull anything I might ever want to, and keep my next truck for several decades and several 100K's mileage. My truck isn't QUITE big enough for that be be true technically (it weighs so much that the GCVWR doesn't give me a lot of leeway for an incredibly huge trailer) but realistically, I think I could pull or carry about anything. And I love my truck.

Now, I've been meaning to poke and prod you a bit more Mr. Ponder. Didn't I see you slip in a little nugget in a thread awhile back that caused me to re-read it about 6 times to make sure I read it right.

Aren't you a closet dually lover? Don't you have a dually hidden out somewhere that you don't let your SRW buddies ever see you in? Didn't you say something like..."sum-bit....this thing rides pretty nice!" Come on....fess up!

Another option would have been to convert your existing rear axle to a dual wheel setup. Using the Arrowcraft dual wheel adapters and a new set of dually rims doesn't change factory ratings, but having four tires carry that amount of weight would make your rig a lot safer...TJ

Thats what i always liked about you BTG, You realize there are many ways to skin a cat.

So far as some Duallie, i dont know what you talking about. Some people may say if Jponder walked out his hunting lodge and took a picture you might see this

But that would be a Lie straight from the devil

Now if i did buy and old 96 dodge duallie with auto and a crew cab then of course i would be most proud of my throttle control which conceivable could get me from 16mpg to 25.4 and it might look like this

but other than that i dont know what you talking about.

here is my truck and it is A DRW worst Nightmare

....I love your engine hoist/truck lift combo tool. I just saw/read your thread on the V-dub - looks like good score. Put a TC on it, and then park that in the bed of your dually and drive it around. A Cummins-powered VW. I was actually expecting to see your plans for a Cummins in the VW.

Ooops...sorry, back to regularly scheduled weight discussions.....

The problem is that in most cases you cannot definitively determine that what appears to be the same axle assembly under different trucks is in fact the same axle assembly.

That is very true. To know for sure, need to contact the axle manufacturer and ask.

As an example, the Visteon 10.25" axles used in 86-97 F250/350/350DRW trucks all 'look' the same from the outside, but the one in F350DRW is rated for 2000 more lbs weight (8250 vs 6250) by Visteon, due to thicker axle tubes. The axle tubes are same outside diameter as the F250/350SRW axle and the center section, brakes and hubs are all the same, but you can't see the thickness of the axle tubes from outside the axle. The DRW axle is also 4" wider the SRW axle.

I would not have known about the thicker axle tubes had I not contacted Visteon engineering deptartment and asked the specifically what the technical differences were between the axles and how to identify them. All I knew before that was the DRW axle was wider and rated for 2000 lbs more weight, but didn't know why it was rated higher.
