We recently returned from Smoky Mountain NP and while staying at Smokemont campground we were systematically victimized by a campground thief.
We noted a chipmunk constantly scurrying around the RV and found that he had learned to squeeze in where the slide seal is--without damaging anything--and helped himself to taco shells, Reese's Cups (he favored these), bread and crackers--anything we left out of the pantry. What a mess he made.
We first noted that the bread was damaged and thought we must have purchased it that way. But later started finding more and more damaged goods.
Now this little guy had it all figured out. We watched him pop-up around the trees and watch us as we sat outside. When he was sure that we were not looking at him he made a dash to under the RV. You can figure the rest on your own.
I would have loved to reward him by giving him the spoils of his hunt but, I know, it is against the rules.
Look out for this little guy if you camp there!

A rat trap set up in my RV will take care of that little nuisance.
I want to leave this earth quietly in my sleep like my grandfather and not like the hysterical, screaming passengers riding in granddad's RV just before the big crash.

If he was a Cajun Chipmunk you could trap him by leaving enough food out and staying away long enough so it couldn't fit back through his entrance point. But then being a Cajun he would have drank up your beer for you. We had a ball playing with these critters a couple of yrs. back in the mtns. of New Mexico. Don't think they can be filled up.

I think a rat trap is just a bit harsh for a little guy that’s just trying to eat a bit better then what he can typically find. Why would someone jump right on killing the chipmunk, I’m sure I’d have been startled to come across him in my kitchen, but it sounds like no real harm was done. Why would someone jump first on killing the little thing. What’s that about!

Just don't get caught doing that in Smokemont. Nuff said.

Obviously you've mistaken me for someone that gives a damn.

My thoughts the only good rat is a dead rat... Applies to other mammels as well..

Have you ever heard of bubonic plague or hanta virus? Or the damage a "little guy" can do to an RV? Better dead than any of that!!

If you folks are so afraid of chipmunks, you probably should get out of camping altogether (plague, hanta virus???)! Maybe try a nice relaxing weekend in the penthouse of the local Hampton Inn (but watch out for possible birds, which we all know carry bird flu and other horrible illnesses). What a great way to enjoy the out-of-doors......go out and kill it. Jeez!

I don't beleive any of us are "afraid" of them. We are simply stating that they INDEED, do LOTS of damage to material things.
These two women I know are so called "wildlife lovers" and they had squirrels in thier attic. They didn't have the heart to kill them after I REPEATEDLY told them they MUST asap. Well, after just a few months up there in the attic where they were so nice and warm and cozy, they caused $6,700.00 worth of damage, and almost burned the house down due to eating the insulation off the electrical wires.
Squirrels and chipmunks are wild animals known as RODENTS. They do LOTS of damage if you let them. If they are running outside living in the trees, I don't bother them. But around my house, as soon as they step thier little feet where they shouldn't be, show's over.

I have this running around to make sure of it.
