I have seen this done before with A/c current and yes they burn very bright!Good you found the problem before any serious damage was caused,make sure you test everything out.

I had a neighbor that decided to put 12volt headlights on his golf cart. Only problem was he wired them to 48 volts. They burned VERY brightly for about 30 seconds. Then he went to buy another set of lights.
