How concerned should I be about the spark plug issue on the 1999-2004 V10 on a B?? I'm looking at a 1999 B with only 28,000mi.
Thanks

Maybe I'm the last to know, but what spark plug issue?

I wouldn't be that worried. You may want to go on and have the plugs changed; they're probably original. Be aware the 99 doesn't have as much power as later years (2000 or 2001). Low maintenance, powerful and smooth.

I would agree with Jim. The improved flow heads started in 2000~2001 and those seem to have the plug blow out issue.

Hmmm... Lots of complaints on various 1999 Ford models with the Trition engines listed here:
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/ford_spark.html

(The problem is the same on all of the Triton engines. My own F250 spit out the #2 spark plug while I was driving down I-84 through Danbury, CT back in April of this year.)

I have no idea what the overall percentage of Triton equiped vehicles that have had problems is though. The TSB that Ford released on this problem is for all Triton engines from 2004 and earlier.

The 99 will have the spark plug holes with only 4 threads, so if it hasn't blown a plug you might at least check the torque of the plugs right off the bat and make sure their not coming loose. If you retorque the plugs you really should use a torque wrench and do it by the book so as not to strip the aluminum threads. They went to 8 threads in the head in 03 which is better.

It's not only on 99 models and I've had two different FORD V8 engines blow the "properly torqued" number 3 plug. So far, we've gotten away with Heli Coils, but I'm just waiting for those to let loose. Then I wait for the other engines in the rest of the vehicles to fail. FORD won't even acknowledge the issue.

I guess I purchase foreign trucks now too, possibly Dodge's with Cummins and service bodies. Hopefully Toyota will make a small diesel truck, or van soon...

I will say, none of ours failed at 28,000 miles, but there are all sorts of people that have had early failures. The engines you are looking at could already have heli coils installed even now...
