We are headed to Moab the end of Sept, for 10 days, and need a little info about ATV use there, as we have always used our 4X4 on those trails, never an ATV. For those from Utah, what are the reciprocity laws for an Idaho registered street legal ATV and can it be ridden on the streets of Moab? For those that ride there, where are some good trails for riding, that are ATV specific and not real extreme? we will be staying at Moab Rim campark south of town. Thanks for any input and information. Feel free to PM me if you want.

You might want to search online for some books for ATV in Moab. I remember seeing them at the campgrounds when we were there. Included trail information. I remmber the Shafer trail was rated easy - never went more than easy after that!

I never regret buying books on the places we visit -

You can't ride around the streets of Moab. In so far as trails, it just depends on what you like or what to do. They are all great! Here is a great book to pick up either beofre your trip or when you get into town.

Here is a list of our favs. Our kids reall enjoy all these;

Picture Frame Arch
Poison Spider Mesa (nice climb, little rocky)
White Wash Sand Dunes
Dolores River Overlook
Onion Creek

I also like these trails but the kids don't like the climb there...not bad just a little drop off;

Gemini Bridges
1st half of Rusty Nail
Metal Masher

Somewhat related...

Famous Stone Arch Collapses in Utah Park
ARCHES NATIONAL PARK, Utah — One of the largest and most photographed stone arches in Arches National Park in the U.S. has collapsed.

Wall Arch fell sometime late Monday or early Tuesday, though no one has reported seeing it collapse, said Paul Henderson, the park's chief of interpretation.

He said the arch, located along the popular Devils Garden Trail, was claimed by forces that will eventually destroy other arches in the park: gravity and erosion.

"They all let go after a while," he said Friday. Nevertheless, it was the first collapse major arch in the park since nearby Landscape Arch fell in 1991.

For years, Wall Arch had been a favorite stopping point for photographers. Like others, it was formed by entrada sandstone being whittled over time into its distinctive formation.

Measuring more than 33 feet tall and 71 feet across, Wall Arch ranked 12th in size among the park's estimated 2,000 arches. It was first reported and named in 1948.

Rock fall from the remaining arms of the arch has forced the closure of a portion of the trail. Henderson said it would reopen when it was deemed safe and debris had been cleared.

Hi,

When I was in Moab, I drove from Moab on highway 128 east to the Colorado River. It was about 7 am, and the sun rise gives a great yellow and pink glow to the rocks. There was also fog and clouds that made it spectacular!

I also drove out to Dead Horse Point and other places, looking over great places to return to for dry camping and great places to spend a month or more!

Arch View is the only park and ride RV campground with full hookups, it is just north of Moab. Lots of trails out from park, a nice place to stay if your not, or can't, haul your quads to the staging areas. There is no street riding of Quads in Moab except for the jamboree once a year.

ATVs are not street legal in Utah. However, there are places you are allowed to ride them on city streets. Most notably in the small communities that border the Piautte Trail system. You can ride down off the trail into the city (on designated streets -- get the Piautte Trail map and it will identify which streets can be used) for gas, food, and hotel accomodations. I'm not familiar with the specifics of the Moab regulations, but I have friends who have said that you canNOT ride on the city streets. You will want to make accomodations at camp areas adn parks where you can ride out of camp... or you will need to trailer to the trail head. Good Luck. Moab is a gorgeous place to visit and ride.

If you can get into Arch View I'd stay there. They have a gas station and small store also. Just ride out of the RV park and enjoy. Stay on the trails along the highway then cross over when trafic has cleared, no hasel from the State patrol folks. You are gonna love Moab.....
