Just added up the numbers for a 2 month trip to Alaska and back. They are:
MH miles driven: 8072
Gallons of fuel used: 1233.6
Cost of fuel: $5793.59 (no correction for exchange rate or credit card fees as they pretty well wash)
Mpg: 6.54
Average daily cost for gas and a place to camp: $116
Gas cost was $4.50-$5.65 in Alaska and up to $6.05/gal in Canada.
Motels in Canada and Alaska ranged from $65 (places I wouldn't want to sleep in) to over $150 a night.
Resturant food in Canada and Alaska is also higher than in the lower 48.
I figure that if we had driven a car, stayed in motels, and ate in resturants all the time, our daily cost would have been well north of $200 a day.
There has been lots of doom and gloom about RVing of late on this forum (and whining about fuel prices), but it's still the cheapest way to travel and to REALLY see the country.
We're now deciding on where to go next!!

We agree with you! So far, we have driven 10,000 miles and many thousand left to travel. Our trip, in 2009, will be the up the east coast and the Maritimes, but not as many miles as this year.

I agree..just did a camping and fishing trip to Canada...12 days, camping & fishing and 600 miles in the MH round trip....total was $1300..and that is for everything, Food, Camping, diesel, etc......what a deal!....what blast!
Opps, I should add $120.00 fuel for the bass boat!
Had great BBQ meals and breakfast egg mcmuffins & pancakes.
Only thing we needed to buy in Canada was 1/2 gallon (2 litres) of milk...at $3.80 and freash bread!
The border was a breeze....nobody is going to Canada anymore.

I'm sure you realize that you did not include the cost of your rig, taxes, tag and maintenance. Don't get me wrong, I love the motorhome idea as much a you and can't wait to make the trip you just made, but I am still writing that monthly payment to the bank. Good luck and God's speed.

I dunno, a TT might have saved about $2,500-$3,000 on gas, or about $40/day, no? Granted Class A is cheaper, but not "cheapest".

We drove 8424 miles from WV to MT and averaged about $150 to $200 for gas and about $40 for camping. I question the $116 for the daily average for gas and camping. Just wondering...

And driving a rice burner, with a Walmart 7'X 7' tent would have been cheaper yet. That is if you want to king of El Cheap'o's. I'll Keep the A. Cheaper yet, just rent the video and do an Al Bundy. Bill

Good point. What do they figure for TCO/mile for a typical MH? If a 100K MH, has a depreciated life of 100K miles, that's $1/mile right there, or $8,000 for 8,000 miles. (That doesn't include interest on the loan, or maintenance.)

...Having your own bed with your own pillows and blankets, your own full refrigerator with what ever you want WHEN you want it, and best of all, your own bathroom at your disposal whenever you need it (especially when you need it "now" and you're 40 miles from the next service area!) = PRICELESS.
