its all relative to your type of living. for most its cheap and others its not. you have to look at your own type of living and compare, comfort, gas, food, driving or not. I think for me its cheaper because of my family size and what I'm use to paying to sleep at and food I eat..JMHO...lol

Everyting has a price. If one has the money to live in the style to which they are accustomed, I say, go for it!! That's what makes this country great. Having my own jet would be cool too, but just as improbable for me. My 2c.

Cheaper yet, just rent the video and do an Al Bundy. Bill Oh, dear. That would never do. Walmart tents are not available with Corian countertops.

I drove a MH to Alaska from St Louis a few years back and put about 10K miles on it over a 40 day round trip. It was a great trip. I estimate that the same trip would now cost me $6K in gas alone. If I just wanted to concentrate on touring in Alaska, I would now consider flying to Anchorage and renting a small RV. that would eliminate approximately 20 days of round trip travel. You could possibly save a bunch of money assuming that rental costs of an RV are reasonable. It's worth checking out.

Don't get me wrong, I love the motorhome idea as much a you and can't wait to make the trip you just made, but I am still writing that monthly payment to the bank. Good luck and God's speed.
The rig is paid for---I only wrote one check. Doesn't cost me any more to use it or park it. Same with insurance ($470) and license (I think around $100). We'll use the MH about 100 days a year, so add another $6.00 a day.
I do my own maintenance. Four oil changes at around $35 each, $70 for new rear brake pads, $12 for a gallon of brake fluid, $27 for a water heater fuse, $30 for spark plugs, $120 for a transmission oil change, and about $40 for radiator cleaner and antifreeze in 3 1/2 yers (or about $125 a year). Peanuts.
I understand the pain of monthly payments. I stopped doing that in 1968 (other than for houses and I don't do that now either) when I got my first new car paid off.

I pay cash for my cars, but eventually they wear out and I have to buy a new one, so they still have a cost/mile. How many miles can one reasonably get out of a MH? 200K? 300K?

But then I would have the cost of a HD tow vehicle and it's higher cost of operation as a 2nd vehicle instead of the Explorer when we're not traveling.

We didn't drive every day. If you average the driving, it was only 128 miles per day. Plus we stayed 3 nights with friends and 1 night at a Walmart for free. Also made use of our Golden Age Passport and state and local public campgrounds frequently.

In fact, since the Quest will soon need replacing, I was actually investigating the possibility of getting an old Class C, instead of a new TV, for the very same reason.
