Parking lot was ok - it was the friendly forum members that got 'em.
I hear they're gonna make a movie about it - called 'Night of the RV Living Dead'.

We stayed in a Flying J truck stop one night several years ago. It was our first and last overnight freebie! We only stay in campgrounds now and would not consider staying anywhere else for free unless it was an emergency! If you can afford to buy a big expensive RV, you can afford a campground. We leave the truck stops for the truckers, they don't have the option of staying anywhere else (except on the side of the road or on a freeway ramp) and we DO! JMHO

Could be lots of reasons for them to stay in a lot overnight. We don't know the circumstance of the OP. Unexpected trip due to family emergency possibly? I can think of many others that might cause a person to stay in a parking lot. Whatever the reason the OP is there and asking advice for proper etiquette. I would think the least that could be done is to give a civil response.
There likely is a Wal-Mart or other large store parking lot available near wherever they are and might be worth the time to find one vs. possibly having the slide knocked off as well as injury or death.
I wouldn't however base my RV purchase on possible parking lot scenarios.
Best of luck to you.

Flyin js usually have an rv parking area also. I know that Carmel Church, Va has a limited number of rv sites infront. Usually, when we get there a couple of rvs parked with slides out taking up half the lot. Tics one off at times.

FWIW, the bedroom slide on our MH is on the curb side and when its in, it is difficult to get around the bed.
That being said, on a recent trip from Utah, we fueled up at a Flying J then pulled in back of the lot as far from traffic as possible.
Backed into a open slot next to the curb and had the slideout open just enough to have access to the bed only taking up one slot.
Cat napped about three hours and didnt have any problem.
Maybe we were just lucky.

Thank you all so much for your input. I am a gentle person so I especially appreciated the gentle responses.
We did make it through the night. A trucker skillfully pulled in next to us with 18 - 24" inches to spare. Why he chose to do that rather than taking one of the thirty empty spaces, I don't know.
And, yes, many circumstances lead to parking somewhere other than a campground. This particular one was not due to poor planning -- just that we didn't want to pull into a campground late at night and disturb others.
Thanks again!

There's been other chatter about this on this board in the past. People who don't Waldock and such don't begin to understand it, people who do would most likely not have bought the kind of rig you did - and for the reasons you just discovered. It's kind of a running (bad) joke.
So what you have is not exactly optimum for its present use, and I wouldn't make a regular practice of it - not at truckstops, anyway. The suggestion that you go to Walmart instead where there is typically a lot more room and a lot less big rigs is the best suggestion I saw. Meanwhile, you've done no harm, but it might be a good idea to carry some traffic cones you can put out if you ever have to do this again. (And it's always a good idea, anyway, since you never know where you might break down.)
Hope all went well.
