No you did not get it right...And your reply is ridiculous and has nothing to do with with the op's question.I do not claim expertise on the subject I only claim that I can read and understand the manufacturer's ratings and specifications.

As can be seen by the six posts from certain individuals they will spend considerable time trying to shout down people who are trying to use a little common sense in this debate. As I found out a long time ago, it does no good trying to argue with these individuals and it is best to simply block them.
Oregon state has a law on the books for driving and that simply states "reasonable and prudent". People need to use that as a towing guideline and coupled with a little common sense would never consider towing some of the outrageous loads they consider hitching behind their trucks. But the USA, no matter how much I love and respect this country, has turned into a country of dumbed down people. A society where we feel we can do as we darn well please and when things hit the fan we expect someone else to clean up the mess. No wonder there are so many lawyers in our country now. Everybody wants a piece of the pie at the rest of societies expense. All the time failing to realize that their actions effect the rest of us. There was a post a few weeks ago about a family from Canada all but wiped out while towing an overly large trailer for the TV. Insurance will pay a hefty penalty for the actions of the father who should have known better. In the end we all as insurance rate payers will suffer for the actions of a few. And that is not right!

The ONLY issue I have with going over the weight rating for anything is LIABILITY. If you are overweight and are in an accident, your insurance can refuse coverage.
If you change your vehicle to be 'safe' with the weight that is on it, and it's over the manufacture's specs for the STOCK configuration for that vehicle, your insurance can refuse coverage.
Other than that....pull whatever you want with whatever you want.

Jayhardy,
We've been using a 3/4 ton truck for the past 4 years to pull our 10,000# (empty weight) fiver - all over the eastern U.S. No problems.
I did have to put airbags on the Ford, but it did fine.
As for the 12-15mpg your "claiming" (not a slam) to get. I believe it. We can get 15mpg easily - towing - if I stay out of the throttle and go at an easy 55-60 mph. Solo, I get about 26mpg - no lie!!!!
Good luck finding what you're wanting and remember........don't let the B@$t@Rd's get to ya!
If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?

I am not trying to shout down anyone. I just pointed out what the op's question was and it has nothing to do with add ons' and that the manufacturers ratings and specifications for the OEM truck are exactly that. Common sense has nothing to do with that.It is simple stated fact by the manufacturer. The question of what we can do to increase the capacities and if they are legal or not is another topic. That a individual thinks that what they have done to make the vehicle "safe" does not mean that it is. There are many things to consider. The manufacturers rating and spec's are a statement by the manufacturer that the vehicle is safe if operated within those spec's. I and many like myself choose to stay withing the stated spec's.I do believe that there should be a law that enforces that or a law that would certify any add on modifications safe. When one operates outside of ratings and specifications they not only jeopardize their own safety but mine as well. I will never stop advising folks to stay within the stated ratings and spec's of the manufacturer.
