Renting would be somewhere around 5000 CAD, since it`s a bit of season. So my thought was that if I buy for 5000 an sell for say 3000, I`ve still saved 3000. And if something needs repair, I would have that money to spend before actually losing anything.
Is it hard to find a car dealer that would buy an RV in the 5000 range, if you give him a good price? That means are there dealers working with that kind of pricerange?

finding a dealer would be iffy.. some dealers right now don't even want a diesel truck on a trade-in, they say they cant sell it. Everybody wants fuel efficient cars. Have had 2 friends looking a new trucks and didn't buy cause dealer would not take their truck as a trade in..It has been taking $112.00 CD to fill our F350 up..last yr it was only about 75.00. and less in the states.
Hope you find something, and have fun planning..Dona

In 2004 we found Private Motorhome Rental and rented a Class A gas from a couple in Georgia. The process worked great for us. Nice website -- pics of the MH you'll be renting and options to take care of insurance and housekeeping stuff (bedding, pots, pans, etc.)
They have a link for Canada.

You might find someone who would "Loan" You a Motor Home for the Time that You are Here!
By Loan ... You would agree on the "Interest Charge" ahead of time and as long as the Vehicle is returned in the same condition as when You received it there would be no Extra Costs involved!
Contact Me If You require Further Information.

Most rentals are prohibited from crossing international borders. So renting might be out of the question. If you can find a rental company that will allow it the weekly rental costs might be so high that you would find hotelling it cheaper. No matter what, check with the rental companies and explain to them that you would like to travel to CanadA too and see what they say.

You will not likely find a RV usable for such a trip, that you might buy for $5000. A small motorhome in good condition, 5 to 8 years old, might cost more like $20,000 to $30,000. For a quick sale after you are through with it, you can expect to get 30% less than what you paid (this is typical dealer margin for used RVs).
Anything older than that, less expensive than that, you may be paying more for repairs during your period of use, than you pay for initial purchase.
In the U.S. today, there are significant legal roadblocks to ownership and registration of a motor vehicle by non-resident foreign nationals. The legal barriers are recent; buying a vehicle for the duration of a trip was a common practice, not too long ago, but the rules have changed since 9/11/2001.
There are ways to work around this (for example, set up a U.S. corporation to buy the vehicle, then rent it to yourself) but the costs will probably be beyond your budget. This strategy works better for someone wanting to buy a $400,000 RV for a long period of use, without becoming a resident.
I don't know the restrictions in Canada. Since your trip is to Canada, you might consider buying or renting in Canada, even though you come through Seattle. Public transportation, Seattle to Vancouver, is readily available.

Magnus, I faced the same problem some 6 years ago. I had 2 months and wanted camping but renting was expensive so I down-graded to a car. Even that was fairly expensive for what we wanted to do. In the end I shipped my Volvo across from Amsterdam to Newark for € 1400 both ways and used a mix of hotels, motels and camping cabins in the US and Canada.
We had the time of our lives but you said you’re leaving in 3 weeks time so no time to ship anything and buying/selling is maybe ok but registering and insurance impossible, I would say, shop around for a rental, I think you might be able to squeeze some discount prices for the length of you’re stay.
I have rented twice since and never directly with a rental firm but with a go-between here in the Netherlands and that saved me hundreds of €€€€€€€
If you like I can ask them for a quote on you’re behalf or try some agency’s in Sweden.
Good luck.

Buying a motor home here in Canada is easy, Insurance and registration not so easy, you need a permanent adres, plus Insurance would be sky high. Selling might be another problem as RV's aren't as hot anymore than a few years ago since the gas prices went thru the roof.
Your best bet is try to rent one, There is Cruise canada those motorhomes are every where with great big murals on them not too attractive , then there is Fraserway rv rentals, and Canadream rv rentals these are some of the bigger rental places i would do a search and see who comes up with the best price, But I can tell you it won't be cheap.http://www.cruisecanada.com/

Seems like renting would be easiest. Would have been funny to have owned an RV in Canada though...
We will not travel any great distances, stay for a long time and do it off season. Should be interesting for someone looking to rent their private MH out. What is the best way of finding a private renter?
