Like I said sound is pretty directional and does not bend well around corners. Stand a sheet of plywood or duct board between you and the generator and the sound will be less.

3' x 4' x 24" plywood covered on the inside by carpet has proved worthwhile. open top. some mfg brands say the genset needs 2' all around for space. but i have found good air movement with less. it is possible to lower the sound level to some degree. any amount is great.

In the Army, we dug holes for our small generators. Made a big difference.
But since we were preparing to face thousand Russian tanks coming through Fulda Pass, I never did understand why a noisy generator was an issue.

Those are for Exhaust only. Most on board Rv gensets are quiet to begin with.
I have done the Plywood enclosure- at Burningman it does help

But since we were preparing to face thousand Russian tanks coming through Fulda Pass, I never did understand why a noisy generator was an issue. I remember those days (1965-67). There were some that suggested that the hole merely be filled in with the generator still in it after a few hours of listening to it. It wasn't as loud as the "little joe" in the M-60 though. That single cylinder diesel kept everyone in our unit awake with a constant "banging" inside our heads. What one had to put up with just to keep the radio running.

No it is not. It is worse at a NASCAR race beause you are parked so close to you neighbor. I was so happy to see a lot more Honda generators at Darlington this year.
Invest in a real quite generator. You may find that having one expands your camping options.

Something else to remember is the noise being transferred thru the frame. When I had an open frame genset, I would place 1" thick foam squares (you can find them in the gardening section) under the frame rails. It helped dampened some of the vibration and also kept the genset from dancing around the truck bed or pavement.
And no, all the exhaust tubing in the world won't quiet down the mechanical noise from the genset. But it is definitely a courtesy to your neighbors to get the fumes above canopy level.
There are some hobbyists on another thread who've spent a lot of time and material trying to make their $300 3000W gensets quieter. If you've got the time and patience to do trial and error, go for it.
Personally, my time is worth more than money to me and my family, so we have gensets purposely designed to be quiet.
