We had Direct TV installed in our coach back in 2004 while in Birch Bay, WA. We signed up for the 2 receiver deal. The second receiver we use at home.

So I want to be sure I have this right. You can turn the service on and off whenever you want? So if we just want to use it a few weeks at a time that can be done without paying a monthly fee??

Who said that? This is not correct. I think the reference was summer vs winter.

In any case, DirecTV won't support this sporadic use; they have bills to pay, too.

When we first bought the Safari, I set up DTV because the auto-seeking King Dome was programmed for DTV instead of Dish. Having neither service before, I just went with DTV and set up an account. The receiver didn’t have an access card, so they sent one for free. I liked DTV enough that I added a second receiver for the house, and later, added the extra Science, Discovery, and etc. channels. The entire bill now is $51 a month for both receivers. Later, I upgraded the coach receiver with a newer one from eBay, and they reset everything to work with the new receiver. The house receiver is one the DTV installer provided.

The only occasional problem I ever have is if I don’t turn on the King dome and let it find the 110 satellite while the coach is parked for a while. The receiver will lose the rolling codes and go dead. (A ‘call to subscribe’ message appears on every channel) A short call to DTV’s customer service fixes it, and it’s no big deal.

As for getting local channels, there is a restriction that’s really due to greedy local-yocal TV stations. It isn’t DTV that’s the problem - it’s the local networks that don’t want your local (home area) channels watched from a receiver in another state. It’s never bothered me as I forget this town exists while I’m on the road. For local news in the area where we happen to be sitting, I crank up the antenna and pick up local stations.

On the subject of turning off the service, why bother? It’s $5 a month for a second receiver, so even 6 months in storage will cost a measly $30 to keep the RV receiver alive. Three months of winter will cost $15. It wouldn’t be worth the hassle of canceling/reactivating the service.

Thanks for all the info. I didn't even know there were alternatives to DTV and DirectTV that would allow us to "pay as we go"...so thank you for that info. I will check into it, as well.

ANOTHER QUESTION: To pick up local channels, someone said they just crank up the antenna. With all the changes in tv's and needing a special receiver (with a voucher from the govt.)...am I going to be able to pick up the stations without the special receiver on each of my tv's (or at my main source)?...since I'm not hooked up to cable tv? Can you pick up local tv stations with just the antenna and not hooked up to a park's cable?

The original question was, "Can you have Direct TV or Dish Network just in your motorhome without having it in your home?"

The answer relative to DirecTV is YES.
(I cannot comment on Dish as I do not, and have not had it).

We are full-timers and we have DirecTV only in our coach. And, with no problems at all.

There's no restriction on local channel reception. It's impossibe to receive your home local channels in "other states". The signal is spot beamed and is lost when you travel outside your home area. You may be refering to the government restriction on receiving the network feeds at your home. With a waiver, both DTV and Dish Network can give you access to the network feeds for rv use. Of course they will then be accessible in your home.

you are referring to the switch to digital for all major TV stations, not the little puny ones. you don't have to have that voucher from the govt but it will save you $40 per receiver. I "assume" that you could feed both TVs from one receiver, in a similar manner that a sat. receiver can feed multiple TVs, all on the same channel at one time however. a knowledgeable user can inform you on that however.
