Every time I wanted to open the door in the evening there was someone starting their campfire and smoking up the whole area. I never said anything to anybody about their campfires as I want them to enjoy their camping experience but it was too much for me.
I had to close the door and turn the air back on. I mean, these smoking fires are just too much sometimes, especially when it's blowing your way.
Next to us at Jellystone in Mammoth Caves, KY, the guy next to us was trying to split wood. I was surprised he didn't know how to split it. He was trying to get the piece of wood to stand on it's own and then try to split with an ax.
Doesn't everybody know that you hold the wood with one hand and take the ax and hit the wood at the top so the ax stays in? Then you lift the whole piece and hit it against the ground. Anyway, this guy kept trying to split the wood and when he hit it with the ax, it would fly away coming towards our coach.
I had to open the window and yell, "please don't let it come flying this way!" as I didn't want it to damage the side of our coach. It seemed like he was 3 ft away from our slide-out. He moved closer to his camper (now 20 ft. from us) and tried to split the wood. It started to fall over as he was swinging and the piece of wood hit him right in the leg (I just shook my head).
His campfire didn't bother us but there was another one that was coming from another direction and it was getting really smokey. I love to camp but we were being smoked out!
So, in conclusion, I agree 100% with the OP. The neighbors need to be considerate with the enjoyment of all campers.

Mr. Mark, are you sure you don't want to re read your post and either delete it or explain it? If you don't like other people and resent their trying to enjoy the camping experience their own way then possibly you should not be camping. Hotels don't have fires and no one will split wood and accidently get to close to you or your things.
Some of these posts are from people I am glad I have not experienced camping next to or close to in all my years of camping.
Zeppi, WE WERE SMOKED OUT!!!..... it was a little too much! I don't want someone damaging my coach so that's why I asked the guy with chopping the firewood not to let the wood fly our way. I don't think that was asking too much.
I'm just being honest... the smoke was TOO much and that's why I closed my door and turned on the air conditioning. I am a little sensivtive to smoke it drives my sinuses crazy. I just don't want to be in the downdraft and sometimes that just happens. Otherwise, I enjoy camping and all the people that I meet.

All RVers are good nice people. How many times have we read about it, here in these forums? Good and nice, UNLESS you want to discuss campfires, Walmart, living in stix/brix houses, loud kids and dogs, candidates, etc.
IMO people are people, no matter where they are.
Incidently, it's my experience that there are more campgrounds WITHOUT campfires than WITH. Therefore, it's no problem for people like myself.
Of course, I don't camp where it's cold....
In fact, I don't camp at all,....not really. Motorhoming, with most of conveniences of home, is not really camping. Camping is what I did in the Boy Scouts, campfire and all.

We have a campfire going from morning until we go to bed. We do most of our cooking on the campfire so we like to have a nice bed of hot coals. If for some reason our campfire offends someone then they can move. Campfires are legal, our right and we will have them.

A lot of discourse on 10 pages but littl of it addresses what the OP actually did say.
Quote: We are in a campground where several residents keep a smoky fire smoldering all day. I understand the appeal of sitting around a campfire and watching the flames. However I don’t understand why these stinking smoke pits are tolerated...
From what I read the complaint was not about campfires per se but about those who allow them to smolder and smoke all day.
Now the OP can correct me if I'm wrong but I take it that his/her inital complaint was not about having a campfire but about smoke from a smoldering fire which appears to smoke all day for no good reason.
of course as I say, I stand to be corrected.

I'm sure glad some of you are not incharge of making the rules. I am surprised by how many people think they can define MY activities.

True enough, seems to me when we meet them in person they usually are.... but behind the safety & anonymity of the internet, well.... that can be a different story.

I think a good fire will produce little smoke. Its wet and other green woods along with other types of wood that cause the excessive smoke. JMO Also on days that the humidity is high and its damp outside seems to keep the smoke below the tree levels. I personally love the smell of campfires but not all the smoke.

This campfire seems to have had more than enough logs and wind to fan the flames.
