Ready to leave for a week on Monday, but haven't determined a site yet. Most of the private RV Parks can't accomodate us next week due to no availability for a rig our size, or just no avail at all. I guess I need to start making plans earlier! Figured we would wait till Monday to leave, as many sites should open up after the weekend is over. Looking to stay anywhere from Mammoth to Bridgeport, with a lot of fishing on the adjenda. Here is a list of places we called and CANT stay:

Silver Lake Resort June Loop - no avail
Twin Lakes Resort Bridgeport - too big
Mono Vista Lee Vining - no avail

If we head up, are we likely to find a spot that we can fit in with a 40ft fiver and CC Long Bed truck in a USFS public campground?

I have friends that stay at Hartly Springs for riding, but I would like to be within walking distance of some creek / lake fishing and am NOT looking to take the bikes with us (I need some different R&R).

I have heard of a couple CG near the Bridgeport Resevoir that look big and open, but prefer to be near the smaller lakes and creeks.

Any suggestions for a big rig with no reservations?

Not sure if it is still allowable, but as a kid (16yrs. ago) we used to set up camp right next to the Walker river off of Hwy 108. Take Hwy 395 out of Bridgeport and turn onto Hwy 108. The river will be on your right hand side. 108 will cross the river and we used to camp in the parking lot at the river access (Right hand side before the bridge). If you make it to the USMC Mountain Warefare Training Center you went too far. It is not that far out of bridgeport.

We knocked the hell out of trout. Rainbow and German Browns. Great place! Have fun where ever you decide to go.

Pine Glen inside New Shady has some larger sites for a USFS camp. 1st come, 1st served though. We were there two weeks ago, campground was full due to the Sherwin Creek fire. My Mom and dad said they've had pretty full campgrounds this summer, because people are staying longer due to fuel prices, so instead of the weekend, they go for a week or so.

Mono Viilage which is about 13 miles East of Bridgeport. Plenty of space for 40' and they do not take reservations. Walking distance to lake fishing and Upper Robinson, but you do need to drive to find decent fishing this time of year.

Thanks for the suggestions. We ended up at Silver Lake Campground(not the private RV Park) on the June Lake loop and it was perfect. Not much shade but the awning was enough for comfort.

Fishing was OK, with some day trips to Saddlebag on Tioga, Lundy, and Virginia Lakes. Pops lives in Mammoth and brought over the canoe for the week. Hiked to Agnew / Gem Lake from Campsite for a day.

Every afternoon/evening was a beautiful view from our porch sitting down with a tumbler full of the good stuff.

While in the area we explored some of the other possible camprounds in the area, and came back very happy with what we found.

We have always camped in the tent in the Sierra, but the wife says never again!

I knew Sherwin Grade would be tough, and have a new found respect for it. Going up was OK just taking it easy, but I anticipated white knuckles bringing 18K down. Geared down the Allison into 3rd, but you can only let it rev so high before using brakes. An exhaust brake would be a huge benefit (is there one that GM will warranty?). I felt a good vibration when braking on the hill that I didn't like as if rotors warped. Checked truck brakes at bottom and smelt a small burn but only with my nose in the wheel. Vibration went away afterwards with normal driving/braking. Maybe my trailer brake setting was too much or not enough for the hill? Trailer brakes did not smell.

Overall great trip, pictures included!

Check with Grant lake down the road from June lake. They dont have phones there and cell phones dont work there either. They do have a few pull throughs. We where there a couple of weeks ago the fishing was great. The lake is down alot.

Years ago I was stationed at the Marine base for 3-1/2 years and right there by the bridge was one of our favorite places to fish.
Was easy to get next to the river to camp, but that was using tents not big RV's.
Good Luck & Drive Safe!

Great pics. Where are the tracks and what is the name of the lake or river at the bottom?
Thanks.
