I found a thread while searching about tipping or not tipping the campground employee who shows you to your space and might help guide you in but I haven’t found anything about the guy at the campground who does the propane.
We had a propane fill at this one campground before we left and after the guy filled out tank seemed to be fishing for a tip. Since we don’t tip at other propane dealers such as Flying J, etc., we didn’t tip him.
However, is it customary to tip the guy at the campground? After we thought about it, I guess we should have as it seems to be one of those situation that just seems to be the right thing to do.
Thanks.

I never have and haven't seen anyone else tip.
Personally, I think tipping has gotten a way out of hand, but that's just my view. I've never had to work for tips either. I suppose if I did, my position would be different.

I really think the tip thing is getting out of hand. The people are paid by their employer so why is a tip necessary? They are not giving exceptional service just doing their job.

It getting like the restaurant business, offer there employees the minimum wages and let the consumer contribute by tipping. This allows the business bigger profits and the consumer foots the bill.

As one who has worked for tips, a CG employee is not one. I tend to tip pretty well in the traditional areas, but like so much in the U.S., "sprawl" has taken over.

Hi,
I have been tipped a couple of times, and I feel a little un-easy about it. I repair air conditioners and get paid well by my employer. I did not feel a tip was nesasary when adjusting the air vents at a studio in Beverly Hills, but I figured if he felt I was worth an extra $20, I would have a nice lunch today!
I know that I did not have to get out my ladder and make the air duct changes, so I did not feel that bad.
But would you tip a guy in Oregon who just filled your car with $4 gas? And tell them thanks? Same thing with the propane, I don't think I would tip them unless it was something out of the ordinary. Such as arriving at a campground around 7 or 8PM without propane and getting someone to fill you up after hours - I might offer them a soda or small bag of chips? But not really a cash reward.
They do say that waitresses are the best tippers!
One thing that bothers me is the "Free" buffets at a casino. Many do not leave a tip, but I always leave a couple of dollars. It is how they make a living - cleaning tables for $3 an hour.
I would think that the hired hand who delivers propane is either making a decent living or being compensated by given free place to stay, or some other means.

Only tip when getting propane if he washes your dishes while he is filling the propane tank. LOL

Every now and then I get tips, I am a Plumber, I make good money,(well it used to be good, now I guess it is just decentmoney.) and usually I try to give the money back. But if they insist then I will take it, heck I can always use and extra 5 to 40 bucks. ( the least and most I have ever got, well A few bottles of bourbon also.)
I have never filled my propane tanks at a CG, but I do not even see the need to tip anyone in a CG, unless they are serving food to my door. And since the wife really lilkes most KOAs, I figure they get twice as much as any other CG, so they really do not need tips.
My wife is a dealer at a local Casino, and not only do the food serive folks work for tips, but so do the dealers. The Slot folks make a little more on the hour in base pay, becuase they get a little less in tips. But the craps and black jack dealers and the other games, well they work for tips. So if you go to a Casino in southern IN please tip the dealers, I need gas to go camping. OH yeah at this Casino all tips go in a pool, well the servers have a pool, the dealers have a pool, even the poker dealers have their own pool, and the slots have a pool. Then every 2 weeks it is all divivded by the number of hours that where worked. So tip them dealers so I can go camping.

This is a little tricky to explain but I'll try. We live in a golf resort that also has a large hotel with four or five restaurants. There is also a members club with a main dining room and a couple of smaller grill rooms with food. At the hotel and at the members restaurants, an 18% service charge is automatically added to each dining tab. As members and long time residents we are aware of this. At the hotel, people come and go. The print on the menu advising the 18% is miniscule and well-hidden. On each bill, if paying by credit card, even though the 18% has been added in, there is a spot to add a tip. Talk about double dipping! I'm sure many vacationing golfers get caught out on this, especially international visitors (we have many) where tipping is often not practiced at all.
We have no choice but to eat at these restaurants often because we are charged a yearly food minimum whether we "eat it up or not."
Many many residents here are from NY and NJ where tipping seems to have evolved into an art form. At the hair salon, one person washes your hair (needs a tip) another colors it (tip) and the stylist cuts and blow dries it (tip). Lets not even get into Christmas...mail person, paper person I've never laid eyes (but who leaves me a smarmy Christmas card with a return empty envelope with their name and address but no stamp on it) on who drives by at 50 mph and flings the paper in the grass next door, neighborhood maintenance guy, guard at the gatehouse (3 shifts daily, guys at Publix where I go every other day who insist on wheeling your grocery cart out because they don't want the carts in the parking lot and every snowbird tips them a buck every single time so they are now like Pavlov's dogs drooling and expecting it.
I go camping in my humble travel trailer to escape all this gated tipping mercenary B.S. I don't eant anyone to do anything extra for me unless it is out of the goodness of their heart and I will thank them with sincere gratitude, if appropriate offer them a drink or a bite to eat and try in any way I can to reciprocate their kindness. IMHO, this tipping maddnes needs to stop...thank you for the vent
