Other than labourday I have not done a trip in september in nearly 20 years, (we do go on thanksgiving in october) but as we are almost empty nesters our 18 year old is done school but still at home (actually wants to come along) we were curious in southern ontario as to how empty the parks get in mid september, weekdays and weekends, anything south of algonquin as we are not sure how many days we are gonna go for, min of 5, max 8, depends on work if I can re-sceduall enough at that point to take a little time off. we took our usual week at the beginning of July, but have not gone since which is odd as we usually go 4 or 5 times through the spring/summer, but it has been an extremely busy year with work, and the weather this year has been s***, so we are considering a trip in september and might be interested in checking out parks that we would never consider in the summer cause they are just to packed.
Has anyone experienced the more popular of our PP's in september over a weekend and few weekdays ? are they less full? quieter? more enjoyable (from the veiwpoint of people who enjoy peice and quiet)
All experiences, thoughts and recomendations welcome. keeping in mind we are looking at staying in southern Ontario as we don't wish to travel more than 5 - 6 hours for this trip.
Thanks

The Ontario Parks (need to check to make sure, they are open) can be incredible in the fall. During the weekdays, the retirees are in the parks enjoying the great fall days, usually bright sunshine with nice views to enjoy that morning coffee outside. On the weekends, the children return. For our money, we like MacGregor Point (open all year around for camping) Pinery, and Point Farms (until Thanksgiving weekend after which it closes). Algonquin can be a challenge to get a site due to the fall colours and the fact that they close many of the campgrounds. Last few years they have had to reopen some of the campgrounds due to the large demand in the fall.
We enjoy the fall the best, no bugs, crisp evenings, nice to watch the change of seasons, etc. If you have any specific questions email us, and we will try and answer them as we have been in over 100 parks in Ontario.
Enjoy the fall, it is a great time to get out and about. We do!

We'll be in Port Burwell in mid September, and it is usually pretty quiet at that time. I just recently looked to see how many sites were booked in our campground at that time, and there was only about 6 sites booked. This is a great place to go in the fall if you like watching the hawk and eagle migrations. They tend to fly right over the campground. You can literally see 1000's of Broadwing Hawks every day between September 10th and 20th, and nothing beats watching Bald Eagles circle over your campsite!

September is by far the best time for camping. The parks are much less occupied and quieter. Enjoy.

We have been tossing around, mcgregor or inverhuron, however the past couple years we have done quite a few trips along the huron shore and general area, as for port burwell we went there last year on labourday, was very nice but we are slowly wereing out the erie shoreline, as its proximity to home lends itself to alot of weekend trips and we will be on erie for thanks giving. we are hoping perhaps north of lake ontario somewhere, I can imagine that algonquin is busy right to the first freeze, and it would be at the outer limits as to how far we would be willing to drive.
keep the sudjestions coming.
thanks

Have you tried Letchworth State Park in NY? We were there for the August long weekend and it was great. No bugs at all. Beautiful scenery too. It was about 3 - 3 1/2 hours from Burlington including the border crossing. Worth a try.

How about Awenda, Earl Rowe, Balsam Lake, Darlington and Sandbanks. All within your driving range and nice parks. Have a great trip...

If you want to head north, I would highly recommend Arrowhead. We were there for a week in July, and it has probably the most private sites (East River campground) we have ever seen. We're already planning next years trip there. And it's very close to Algonquin, which is handy for day trips.

I just got back from a week at Inverhuron. What a great place. Hot showers, clean/new facility, great beach and private sites.
Nothing beats Algonquin 3rd week of September.
But our September trip this year will be Grundy Lake PP.

well the choice is made, I looked at bookings for several parks, and decided on a combination of very quiet ,good fishing, and some nice scenery, and it ends up being Ferris PP outside of Campbellford, I fished there 4 years ago and was excelent in some spots on the river, for half our stay there according to the reservation system we are shareing the entire section with only one other camper and 3 for 2 days of it, and unless other book in we have the section to ourselves for3 days, don't get more peicefull than that, but I imagine there will be drop ins that are not reserved, but still should be pretty relaxing, in case anyone is wondering yes Ferris does have hydro sites now, 19 were installed as a test to see if it was viable to do more. the site discription are wrong though, they show the triangle for medium sites on alot of sites that can handle equipment easily over the 30' range. We just are hoping that good weather prevails, and we end up with only a day or 2 of rain (if not less)
