It is a little farther to go through the U.P. but not really that much considering where you're headed. Map Quest shows Rapid City to Niagara via Chicago and Detroit at 1439.77 mi. Rapid City to Niagara via Mackinaw City and Port Huron at 1565.20 mi. If you took the advice of some, myself included and took I-39 from Rockford to LaSalle it would add about another 50 mi to the trip around Chicago. That would make the difference only about 75 mi. But as stated you'll spend more for gas in the U.P. and Canada. The Canadian part of the trip would be about 250 mi. so if you can go that far between fill-ups no problem, just gas up before crossing.

It takes 30 minutes to get from the west side of Chicago to the Indiana state line on a good day. It has never taken me more than an hour, and that was in the late afternoon when the construction project had traffic down to two 12-foot lanes.
I've gone through the U.P. to avoid Chicago, for a northwest L.P. destination. It adds about a day to the trip. (And I still had to go through Kansas City and Minneapolis, each as congested as Chicago). If your "avoid Chicago" route takes you through Toronto, be advised that Toronto is also a big city with lots of traffic on the freeways in and around.

Did some checking.
The fastest way is probably through Chicago, lower Michigan to Port Huron, and across Ontario: about 1440 miles. About 1480 miles if you stay in the U.S., go through Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
Going through the U.P. of Michigan to avoid Chicago, an extra half day, 1575 miles. That's still going across Ontario from Port Huron/Sarnia.
Going around the north shore of Lake Huron, through SS Marie, Sudbury and Toronto, 1616 miles.
Going around the north shore of Lake Superior, an extra couple days, 1800 miles.
Would you be avoiding Chicago in an effort to save time?
