The generator electronic controller must see AC voltage being produced. If it doesn't see AC voltage it will shut off when the starter is released. My Honda EV4010 was the same way. My voltage regulator failed and it acted just like you describe.

Probably a bad voltage regulator. You can find aftermarket voltage regulators for Onan all over the internet. Check the resistance between the brushes, should be the same resistance you read between the slip rings. Should be somewhere around 28 ohms. The replacement voltage regulator that I bought for my Onan said the warranty would not be valid if the reading across the pins coming from the brushes exceeded 28 ohms.

You may want to check your oil levels. There is a low oil sensor that will either cause the engine to start and die shortly after. OR I have heard that some will pulse as the oil level flipflops with the crank...
Just a piece of free advice..
Good luck and keep us posted

It is the voltage regulator. Talked to Onan pro and he was right. This fixed mine and that has been about 2 years ago. Get the number off the old regulator to get an exact replacement. I found mine on the internet about i/2 of Onan's price and have had no problem with it.
Hope this helps, Ed

Why does a voltage regulator have to cost that kind of money? That's about as ridiculous as the Memorex DVD player we bought at Kmart yesterday for $27.50 + tax, which was still under $30 bucks and it costs me at least $20 to ship a mid sized package somewhere.
Oh well, maybe it's a rare American made product.
Sure glad Guardian sent me that whole box of parts for my 10 year old 5.5 Generac... free of charge, but that deal is over. The two great guys are gone and the whole facility at that location is scheduled for shutdown, which may have accounted for the freebees.
I posted that rare event, as I always do, when awarding ....attaboys...so I hope some of you took advantage and got your free spare parts while the getting was good!
