I just discovered something else that will cause this. It think I have a ground fault in one of my AC circuits.
If the breaker for that circuit is closed, the genset detects the fault and shuts off on startup with a "service needed" code, even before building enough voltage to trip the breaker. If I open the breaker to the bad circuit, the genset is fine. So what looks like a generator problem is a house wiring problem.
If I hadn't caught this, I could have thrown a lot of money into diagnosing a generator problem that wasn't there. Instead, I need to dig into the house wiring.
Kill the main breaker, see if the generator still faults. If it runs OK, then the problem may be outside the generator.
