I believe it is a TSB, they got a letter. They report that they seemed to gain some performance and a bit quieter engine, too!

I have the 4.88 rear end. I just came back from a 4300 mile trip where I hauled a heavy load on the way and came home with a very light load. First let me say the truck does not like to go faster than 65. I run it at between 60 - 62. My fuel mileage loaded with roughly 13,000 lbs. was 10.5 - 11.5. Unloaded on the way home was 13.2 - 14. I have 23,000 miles on the truck.

I have an 08 F-450, automatic (not sure, are they all auto ?) with 4.30 rear gears. I've got about 5000 miles on it now, mostly towing a 14-15k toy hauler. I get around 8-9 pulling the trailer, and I think around 13 without the trailer. I don't go over 65 mph (with 4.88, I'd probably be less likely to drive 65).

If you want it to tow your 15k+ load, you'll be happy with the purchase. If you want it to get groceries and commute to work, and then occasionally pull the trailer, then you'll be unhappy with mileage (and the width and the length).

What a great question.

First of all I am not sure what gears my truck has (too early in the morning for me to think, but they are the gears so that the truck can tow ANYTHING!!)

I have an 08 (and so does my brother) F450 4x4 Lariat. We purchased these trucks for one reason only, to tow the rig. I have a KZ 40P 18k loaded. My truck does not even know it is there (small egzageration).

As for the mileage, it sucks. I don't know how anybody (maybe it is the gears) can get more than 9 per gallon when not towing. I get mid nines when really watching the tachometer, and going easy on the gas (no freeway driving). When we tow I get about 6. My brother claims a little worse on the mileage at 8 per gallon.

Here is the problem you have.

If you want a *****en truck to pull whatever you want (whatever you want 24k) then you have no choice. The only other vehicle you could look at is a freightliner???

The Ford does have excellent turning radius and is a little rough on the ride when you are not loaded. Like the other poster said, it is a redneck magnet (it is a nice truck).

Seems that you already have an X plan, but there is also a Ford forum you can get many more answers from www.blueovalforums.com

Good luck.

I have an 08 F450 Lariat 4X4. I use it to tow a 38' 17k lb toyhauler and I love it. It's very stable and you will love the way it can turn. My mileage is about what everyone else is saying. I rarely use it except for towing the trailer. I get about 7-8 MPG. 4.33 gears.

Although I have the 08 F350, I will weigh in. I get 9-10 MPG pulling with 4.30 gears and 14,500 pounds. Without anything, I am averaging 12.5 to 13 MPG and I watch the tach and keep my foot out of it, although, the latter is sometimes really difficult. It is freaking blast to punch the pedal and feel it take off. My truck gets lots of looks and I love it. Would I like better mileage, well heck yes; however, I knew what I was in for and my wife loves our TH so it is what it is. I only bought it to tow the TH and if we ever get rid of the TH, I get rid of the truck although I do love it so.

What he said. Except I've never seen 12.5-13 mpg yet. Truck only has 6100 miles on it so I hope it gets a little better.
Nicest truck I've ever owned.

howdy howdy!

i would not recommend making the F450 your daily driver, my MPG towing 18 - 20k is around 6-8mpg depending on the grades and how fast. i try to keep up at least 55 to 60mph or even 70 at times =)

I did the samething was about to drop the hammer on an F450 untill I read about all of the fuel economy issues. Then I checked on the braking because that the real reason I was wanting to upgrade. The local ford store and a local brake shop said the brakes on the F450 suck. They told me that yeas they are bigger than the F250/350 but still not big enough. With this all being said I went HDT it was about 25000 less and it stops with know problems and goes up and down the 6 to 8% grades with ease. Check out escapees.com under HDT and if you need more info on the F450 check the LDT light duty truck link and you'll find tons of info. Hope this helps. Oh by the way fully loaded I am getting 8 to 8.5 empy it is 11 to 13mpg depending on the terrain. Last trip to Bryce Canyon lowest was 6.5 going up a 8% grade as soon as we got to flat ground average came back up to the 8's.

The brakes on the 2008 F450 are perfect. I set my rig up with disk brakes. The truck will stop the trailer with no problem and the trailer with stop the truck. I know because I have tried. The new trucks have had some radiator problems and I have recently posted the flash information. I would buy another in a heartbeat. It is a towing machine and handles well. I average about 8.6 mpg loaded without having my foot in the pedal. I usually tow a little above 29,000 CGVW.
