My F550 has the 6.0 and it gets 13 empty and 8 loaded with 16k. It has the 4.88 gears and 6spd manual. My brother in law has an '08 F450 and he pulls a huge horse trailer with/ LQ and gets like 5mpg loaded and 9mpg empty. He hates the truck and is fixing to sell it. He's always complaining about the thing.
Definitely something wrong here. I get 8-9 towing 17k at 13 feet high and 13 city 14-15 mixed driving empty with my 08 F450 automatic. People with manual transmissions have consistently gotten 1-2 MPG better than autos. I do have 4.30 gears...with the 6.4 engine there is no reason to have 4.88s as shown by the fact that Ford discontinued them.

It won't matter, he is going to sell it soon. He doesn't stay in a vehicle very long. My wife loves the king ranch interior. That smell of real leather is awesome. I just can't stand the daily driving part of this truck. I live on a .5 mile stretch of dirt road and this truck beats the tar out of my kidneys when empty.

Well I finally had a chance to run the truck empty over the weekend (just over 500 miles)and my mileage was 12.5/mpg and I averaged 70mph. Not great but not bad because it was all mountain travel.

revtech100, "LOL" all you want, could care less, I only get 350 miles on a tank when I do lots of city driving (you know, stop & go traffic). I didn't make myself clear, I didn't get 500 miles on one tank (that was the total miles I put on over the weekend trip) I put 363 miles on a tank and put in 29.015 gals to top off the tank, therefore, getting 12.5mpg. This is hand calculated becasue according to the lie-o-meter I was averaging 13.9mpg.

My god! I went and looked at a new 450. Let me say it is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!! I'm in the process of looking for a replacement for the Chevy, and it will be my daily driver. I can't afford the new vehicle for just towing. But how can you live with 12.5mpg empty? I can't, so I doubt the Ford 6.4l is for me.

IMO, you will not want an F-450 for your daily driver. Ride is too rough unloaded, and it's too wide and too long too. Maybe if you are out in the middle of nowhere all the time, the width and length might not be as much of an issue, but in town, forget it.

Mav, I don't, the truck is used 99% of the time towing. I drive a 08' Ford Focus for a everyday driver which averages 34mpg in mixed city/hwy. I agree with you, stay far, far, far away from the F-450 if it has to be a daily driver also.

I don't mind the size at all. I like big toys, and so does the wife. We live in the country, and I can always park far away. My problem is the mileage. It's horrible. I have heard of some getting better MPGs when the DPF is deleted and a programer is added, but that is quite a bit of money. But even if I look at the slightly smaller F350, the same motor and setup are there with the same bad MPGs.

He has a 4.86 mine is a 3.73
I have a 40 toyhauler w/ thre atvs and he had a 41' with two atvs.

It was a real eye opener.

Right then, I get 20 mpg unloaded at 70+ mph and 12-14 mpg towing ~15k lbs at 60+ mph on my 03 PSD with a bone stock six-oh in hilly Kalifonia.
