My 450 with 4.88s now has about 15,000 miles on it. I have had the latest software updates for my May '07 built truck, 08-13-2 installed prior to our last rv outing. Round trip from Southern Maryland to Lancaster, PA mileage averaged 10.9mpg at a steady 55mph towing a 12k lb. fifth wheel. Unloaded highway driving I am averaging 11.5 to 13.5mpg. I know there will be those that slam that kind of mileage, but I am quite happy with it. I am not happy with $4.39 a gallon diesel. Best dang heavy hauling/towing pickup built.

I must say I would be completely happy if I got 14 mpg while not towing. If Ford would come out with an kit to replace the 4.88's I might go for it. I wonder if you must replace the carrier when going with the higher gears?

On another note, I am traveling through Oregon (I was in Springfield, Hi 66stang351 I'm sure I drove right by your place) on my way to Brookings. I noticed a growling noise coming from the engine. I pulled over and saw a small puddle under the truck, on furter inspection I I found a fitting next to the fire wall on the drivers side that was leaking power steering fluid. The only thing I can figure is I drove out of a very steep driveway flexing the frame of the truck in turn flexing the fitting either causing it to crack the tube or tearing the o-ring in the fitting. I made it as far as Coos Bay where I will take it to the Ford Dealer tomorrow. My problem with this is I had the radiator problem where the frame flexed and cracked some the seams of the radiator. The truck seams prone to this kind of problem. What is next?
You were within 25 miles of my place...I've made that trip to Brookings to many times to count.

As for the radiator problem on the 08 Superduty, it wasn't a flexing issue so much as a manufacturing defect. There was a batch that didn't have the tanks properly crimped on in the Job 1 trucks.

I'll take my fuel lovin F-450 anyday knowing that it's not overloaded. Now before anyone gets offended, I pulled our Raptor with a F-250 with no problems but I just needed the peace of mind of having training wheels back there.
Capt Skup, I'm paying $3.86/gal for diesel in my neck of the woods.

Ditto here.. I used to pull my 17k lb 5th wheel with my F250. Never had any towing related issues,,but I was overweight. Now I am underweight and feel much better and I'm undoubtedly safer for me and others on the road. I love my F450,,mileage and all

Just based on gear ratio alone if you put in 26 gallons he should put in 34 all else being equal, so him putting 35-36 with you at 26-27 he is about 1 gallon wasted on emissions. Now if he had 4.30s instead of the 4.88s the difference would be 26 for you and 29 for him...add the gallon and he would be at 30. This is the reason why Ford dropped the 4.88s...there was really no reason for them and they really eat fuel.

I just joined the F-450 crew. Picked up a Job 3 King Ranch last evening. Installing the hitch and spray in bedliner next week. Can't wait to hitch it up to my 17,000 lb Toy Hauler and see how it tows.

Although I've had the truck less than 24 hours, got to say that I agree with all of the other folks here on this forum and the dieselstop, who have said... LOVE THAT TRUCK! about their 450's.
