Weather the stories being told are true or not does not change the fact that they are exceptions and that the legal use of firearms and their owners offer a benefit to every person in the country.
Example
Animal Population control
Disease risk reduction for hunted species
Increased biodiversity (non hunted animals herds grow and take recourses from other animals)
Reduced risk of car-deer accidents (pita has a stat that says it increases them which is absolutely false)
Reduction in damage to crops and ornamental species (estimated it would be 1 billion per year without hunting)
Single largest source of funding for species management and environmental protection in the world
Health benefits associated with strenuous outdoor activity
Sense of accomplishment/achievement
Sense of connecting with nature
Wild organic food source (the lead bullet issue is false and just a reason to limit gun ownership through red tape)
Hunting is a very safe sport compared to most other organized sports
Besides putting more money into conservation that every other source combined gun owners and hunters put billions into the economies of the small towns and recreation areas us RVers use each year.
You can’t teach a soldier to fight in 8 or 16 weeks of basic training, a hunter shows up with some field knowledge and experience.
Gun bans have never reduced crime, in several cases violent crime went up.
Somewhere between 99.9 and 100% of Americans use or have benefited from hunting or animal products where the animal was killed to harvest the product, from building roads, making soap, drugs, food, vegetables….
With that said if you do not like firearms and are not willing to know/learn how to properly use them, we are all better off if you do not buy one. Just don’t try to take my rights away because you “feel” guns are bad.
I support enforcing all laws to lock up criminals that use guns, look it up there are plenty that are not enforced and the result is; more crime gets blamed on legal gun owners; I do not support making more anti gun laws. I also find it odd that there are anti gun lobbying groups that support and consult Hollywood directors to portray guns in a poor light.
Mod Note: You're right. The last line was removed as it cited one presidential candidate's voting record. This, by definition, is political.

I just have to say that of all the gazillion gun threads that have been started, debated, abused and finally locked over the years, this has been the most civil and, in general, been attended by the most mannerly people I've seen. This has not been a testosterone driven shouting match, but rather a civil discussion of the goods and bads of private gun ownership and it's been refreshing.

I completely agree. Being a new member, I had to wonder what I started, but they've all been very well debated. I'm leaving this Saturday for the trip that started this thread (if I don't get stopped by Hurricane Hanna), so we'll just see how this trip turns out. I'll let you know in 3 weeks when I get back!

I'm not against hunting rifles. I would not own a handgun or an automatic weapon. My choice.

You can’t own an automatic weapon in the USA without all kinds of annual fees, red tape , special use permits and regulation, you can not hunt with an auto weapon anywhere in the USA that I know and you can not conceal a full auto weapon even with a concealed carry permit . The term the media uses is semiautomatic in attempt to make non gun owners think of machine guns, in reality semi auto applies to any firearm that fires a single shot each time the trigger is pulled, from a revolver to shotguns.
The use of full auto weapons would be opposed to by most gun owners in the country and would have no use for safety, hunting, target shooting or just about any hunting sport.
To key terms used to instill fear are Semi auto, assault, and high powered. They invoke imagines of big scary guns when in fact they are not.

the freedom and right to carry must be nice, sometimes I wish we in Canada had that freedom/right, it would have its pros and cons in our sociaty just as it does yours. for now a hunting or fish filetting knife works good for me, never had to use either but I think the upclose and personal effect of taking out a criminal would be much more rewarding than 10 feet away with a gun, watching the life fade from his eyes at 10 inches away would give a greater feeling of saticfaction as you thrust the 10 inches of blade up under his ribcage twisting it in a large circular motion to ,,,,well not to get to discriptive here.
as many have said on here there is no sence in even contimplating carrying if you are not prepared and able to make that instant decision and action to kill, and are prepared to live with that action for the rest of your life, as well to live with the consiquences if you make a mistake and in a heartbeat shoot someone who was not a threat. even cops have made that mistake.

Just to give a bit to think about; lest not forget why the 2nd was written into the Constitution.
It's NOT for hunting, home defense,or recreational.
When you allow to pass the right to have "bad" guns, you are eroding the right to have PC guns.
The 2nd was put into place to allow the People the strength to keep the Govornment in check; that can't be done with .38s, bolt rifles, and shotguns alone.
Keep in mind the original intent when turning your back on guns you are not comfortable with.

And with this last post, unless someone comes up with a real good reason why, I'm thinking the topic has played out.
That said, THANK YOU ALL!!! for staying on topic and being civil with each other.
