We drove to the Canadian border towards Haines from Glennallen and it was a great ride. But we drove to Skagway from Whitehorse and then road the Fjords Express boat from Skagway to Haines and Juneau. Haines wasn't much, but the ride to and from Juneau was fantastic. We saw lots of whales, even breaching.
Hi - we drove to Haines, stayed at Oceanside, NOT Hitch-up! Why to a waterfront town and stay where you can't see the water??? Hitch-up is very nice looking - well-manicured, but we wanted to be on the water. Oceanside "might" be tight for a 5-er, but fine for MH+toad combo's. In Haines we drove out to the state park and watched griz's fish for salmon, had eagles overhead. Likewise, would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Fjordland Tour to Juneau for the day. GREAT business, great/clean boat, saw lots of whates, porpoise, sea lions. Juneau itself was just OK, but the ride was great!!! We took the State ferry from Haines to Skagway - 15 water miles vs 360 or so land miles! Figure it SAVED me money! Skagway - well, cruise ship central. We got off the state ferry at 8:30am, toured everything we wanted to see in Skagway, then drove to Whitehorse for the night! Hope this helps! ST

Thanks to all for your help.
due to weather (RAIN/RAIN/RAIN) we opted to take the toad down from haines junction. i'm actually sitting in haines right now (got internet while in the usa!).
the trip down was gorgeous. we've seen alot of beauty in the last 3 months but the haines hwy was right up there on the 'beauty scale'.
haines is cute-small shops, but doesn't appear too touristy.
there is a hammer museum (?) that honey wants to visit. the view across the harbor is magnificent..
so, i would highly recommend this trip-i'm only a little sorry that we didn't take the mh and stay a while...maybe next time.

I don't think a person who finds grand scenery and quaint old northern towns uninteresting should venture out from big city environs.
