Wow! Appreciate the responses. We've been up 101 a few times, but never in the winter. I just assumed it would be the more difficult drive in winter conditions what w/ I-5 being an interstate and all. I may have to re-think the route. Time isn't too much of a consideration as I planned on taking most of January to get there. It does look like if I go 101 I'm pretty much on it til I get to Aberdeen, WA and US 12/ST 8 to Olympia. Anyone w/ info on that stretch of road that time of year? Thanks again.

Again if you take hwy101 North DO NOT cross into Washington. Instead at this point you can take HWY30 to Longview,WA and cross the bridge there and pick up I5. Hwy 30 is relatively easy drive and mostly flat with a few hills and one long down hill to the bridge at Longview. You have by passed Portland and the worst of the weather conditions. Sorry there is no easy way around Seattle except to drive through it at 2:30 in the morning. Then it is clear sailing up to around Mt Vernon and Bellingham. The weather can get pretty nasty along that stretch of highway.
