Wondering if any of you could help with a route. Have a 34ft 5th wheel which is 52ft overall on truck and 13ft high.

We are planning to stay at the South Rim of the Canyon, head over 89 in Utah, then back track down to Fredonia to pick up 389 and 59 to get to Virgin Utah for a campground. That way we don't have to deal with the tunnel in Zion.

Is that a good route to Zion, or should we stay in Kanab instead of Virgin.

After that I'm wondering which route is best to head back east to Vermont up in the north? Head up to Salt Lake City and take I80? or drop back to Flagstaff and take I40, then up I25to Denver etc.?

Thanks for any help.

389 and 59 is the route we take when going east from home (southwest Utah). If you also plan to visit Bryce, stay in Kanab's

Take 89 north to I-70 then east.

We stayed at Bauer's Canyon Ranch RV Park in Glendale, UT. It was a nice campground just about halfway between Zion and Bryce Canyon. While you are there don't miss Kodachrome Basin State Park, about 20 or so miles past Bryce Canyon Turnoff on Hwt 12.

That's the route we took on our recent trip to get to the Zion area from the Grand Canyon area. Good roads all the way. The only significant hills are both going downhill. First, just north of Flagstaff. Second, coming into Virgin, UT. Coming back, you could go up I-15 to I-70. Then head east. That's probably the easiest.

Were me, I'd stay in Kanab, take the TV to Zion, then 89/12/24 to I-70. If you take I-15 to I-70, you'll miss one of the more spectacular routes in the Intermountain West. Google "Scenic Highway 12 in Utah". I'd link it for you, but there are a number of sites to peruse and they will all come up with a google.

johnna got me onto that route before we went and it is great. Not sure why you are going to Virgin but would not recommend Zion River RV Park (expensive rip-off; email or pm me if you would like details). Zion Canyon in Springdale is much better.

Ranger Bob, when you whip through Fredonia and Kanab, be on the lookout for "Latex Larry" as the locals call him. He sits in a patrol car along the main drag, reminding people to slow down. Unless you know what to look for, you'd swear he was a real cop! BTW....sometimes he IS real, they tell me.

Great route. We did this last year with no problems. We also stopped at Moab for a few days to see Arches NP and Canyonlands NP.

Thanks for all the tips and advice.

Here is what we found when we arrived in Zion approaching from Virgin, Utah side:

You can no longer take an unloaded dually pickup through the tunnel without paying the $15 escort fee each way. They immediately told me that at the South Entance Gate. That means a hefty fee to see Zion for a few days if you stay in Kanab, so Kanab is out of the question for duallies planning to visit Zion for more than a day.

We also found the Zion River Resort campground in Virgin, Utah to be a great place to stay. The trip to Bryce around via the interstate is the same time as going through the tunnel, but, of course, there is no tunnel fee each way.

Route I70 back East does not seem to be a good choice for us, because we are heading back to Northern Vermont. I70 really heads for Lower Pennsylvania or the Philadelphia area, and the truckers told us the road surface is just terrible.

We are hoping I80, which does head to Northern New York on the way to Vermont, has a better road surface.

Thanks again for all the tips,

Ranger Bob
