I'd support a spare for 60 bucks, may be an identical cooling unit (the part that needs occasional replacement)
Page 2: If your fridge is working on gas, but not on electric, it may just need a new heat element. not very expensive and fairly easy to replace

One more question...If it is bad and we replace it. What do we do with the old unit? Do places rebuild/refurbish them? I'd prefer to see it be recycled. Do they take them like the core charges on batteries? We have a Camping World in driving distance. If not, is it just scrap metal?

If your original fridge turns out to be repairable, the 60 dollar one would make a nice side by side for that family. If its possible that is.

If the ammonia is already escaped, and it were mine, I'd dismantle it part by part and throw the parts in my trash for the trash truck to take away. I've done this with washing machines and clothe dryers. I don't think ammonia is harmful to the environment, otherwise a few million farmers would never be able to use ammonia in their fields.
Strip it and put the parts a few at a time in the trash!

Wait, it gets even better! She told me the price is $40 and its a 93ish camper they are gutting to make a flatbed trailer and she invited us to come see what else we might want for fixing our up! Woot! We are definitely getting the fridge and a cd player.

Aren't the coils aluminum? If so I'd think it would be worth taking to the scrap metal yard. No?
And as far as farmers and ammonia, We are rural, there's tanks of ammonia all over the place around here, although I think they are having to lock it up now because of the meth lab folks and truck bombers. Stupid least common denominator idiots.

The Ammonia Smell doesn't have to be strong ! Any ammonia Smell indicates a Leak, also look at any "White" Plastic . If It has gone Yellowish You Have a Leak!

If you smelled any amount of ammonia, the cooling unit has leaked and is bad. You can replace the cooling unit and depending on your specific unit, yes, they will want it back as a "core" for the next guy.
So if the refer you are looking to buy for $60.00 is operational, buy it.

I definitely smelled ammonia, faint as it was. So it looks like this is not going to be a back up fridge, but my new replacement fridge. God provides, once again!
So I guess what I am asking is if an RV fridge repair place will take my old bad fridge to rebuild to resell for the next guy? It would be nice if I got a few bucks for it, but I'd be okay with them just taking it and reusing it to resell and keeping it out of the landfill. If they take the old cooling units as cores, I gotta imagine they will take this old fridge to redo.
