I keep reading not to try to back up with a class c pulling a toad and wondered why. does it have to do with the towed car or with the difficulty in backing up the combination of rv and car?
I recently "accidently" pulled into a dead end street where I couldn't pull around to get out - I could have tried to back the car& rv back about 10 feet to get back on the main road, but instead unhooked and backed each up separately then hooked up again.
= big pain to do that, esp with a lot of neighbors who came out to see what was going on. thanks

I guess one way to find out why is to try it....then you will know why..

If you where in a straight line, you can it for a little bit till the front wheels of the toad decide they want to head a different direction.

The problem with backing up with a Toad, is the toad steering wheel will turn, then the front wheels will be sideways and scrub the tread off, the Tow bar can be put in a bind and the tow bar can become distorted and you can not see what the toad is doing and won't know which way to turn the MH steering to make the toad go the way you want. Take your medicine, unhook like you did, back everything up by itself, turn around and put it all back together. Now I have backed "Straight" a short distant with the toad hooked up by having the wife sit in the toad with walki talky and holding the Toad steering wheel straight while I backed up. She was talking to me all of the time informing me that everything was still straight. But I would not attempt to try turning one way or the other doing this method, just straight back and for only a short distance.

Tow bars are designed to *tow* a car, not *push* a car. Look at the system design & you'll see why.

Try this if you only have to back up just a few feet....Have the copilot steer the MH, then you get in the toad and "pull" the MH in reverse. This will work if the toad has the power.

I have pulled the Journey backwards this way with the Cherokee.

It will twist every which way but the way you want to go.

One time will make a believer out of you.

You CAN back up If you have someone hold the toad steering wheel. Slow and fairly straight. The only major reason for not backing up is the steering geometry of the toad will cause the steering to go to full turn lock. If the wheel is held it can and is done safely.

It is one of those general statements that cover everyones backside.

It's like casters on a grocery cart. The front wheels want to "point" in the direction they are going. They turn as far as they can to get there.
