We are just about to start South down the Kenai and are looking to book a halibut charter, maybe a combo with salmon. Anyone have an suggestions. We are planning to go to Homer, maybe stop at Ninilchek, and probably go over to Seward also. Any recommendations as to place and charter company would be appreciated.

This is 2005 info.

Some of the charters were rather expensive. If you are into saving money look into the "TourSaver" book that is sold at a number of stores. We got ours at Carr's. It is a 2 for 1 coupon book. We never had any problem with any of the businesses listed in the book and saved right at $800.00 after deducting the cost of the book. In my recollection there were several charter coupons in the book. Probably worth looking into. They will let you preview the book before buying it because some of the coupons are date sensitive.

Charters are available in Homer, but Ninilchik (sp) would be my choice, although we just watched. The boats are backed into the water on the beach by big tractors and the course out Cook Inlet takes you by some great scenery. It would be a very unique experience. BTW there were plenty of Halibut brought back.

But I don't know about the salmon. I do know they were getting Coho in the bay near homer, but I don't know about Cook Inlet.

If you want a quick and (relatively) inexpensive halibut trip, take the boats out of Ninilchik.

If you are after big "but, you'll probably want to go to Homer. Most of the charter operators there can put you on to relatively small halibut for a 1/2 day charter and onto the bigger ones with a full day charter (often have to run further to get to the big ones).

This is the Kenai Peninsula view...if you really want to go for big halibut, might consider St. Paul, etc.

We fished out of Ninilchek last year (2007) on Afishunter and had a great trip. Best boats, gear and crews on these boats. Yes, the launch is from the beach and it is alot of fun for starting and ending a trip. Next trip, I will go with Afishunter again! OH--got our limit on both trips, biggest was a nice 71 pounder that is great eating.

In Homer we recommend going out with Captain Josh at Bob's Trophy Charters. He was raised in Homer & knows the good spots. He put us on nice fish & everyone limited both days. Good luck.

We've just spent the last 6 weeks all over the Kenai and you can't go wrong with any of the charters out of any of the ports. They all come in full up every day. The full day charters seem to have larger halibut than the 1/2 day, because they run out further. Catching them is no problem, I got 6 on a half day, but you can only keep 2 per day.
Enjoy,
