If the solution is not harmful to grass etc., what is the liklihood that any sanitization is occuring?

Agreed. The recommendation for disinfection is 1 to 5 solution using a bleach that has a 5.25% concentration of sodium hypochlorite. That will kill grass dead. Anything less than that and the question remains, what is the likelihood that any sanitizing is taking place?

My owners manual instructed me to mix 1/4 cup of bleach in a gallon of water and add it to the fresh water tank. It further instructed me to repeat this process for every 15 gallons of tank capacity and to fill the rest up with fresh water. So in my 50 gallon fresh water tank I end up with about 3/4 cup of bleach and the rest water.

Does that sanitize? I don't know. I was just trying to follow the instructions. Is the ratio supposed to be greater to truly sanitize the tank and lines? Can you have too much bleach in there? Is there no end to my ignorance?

even a low concentration of bleach will sanitize, it just takes longer. The more clorine works at doing it's thing, the more it uses it's self up. So, if the concentration is not strong enough to kill all the bacteria present, there will be no clorine left after awhile. The only way to know the amount left is to use a test strip & the only way to know if you have actually killed ALL bacteria is to have the water tested. That's why they tell you to use a high concentration.

No. And I always add a ounce or so to my Christmas Tree water. It keeps the needles from falling for a longer period of time. I'm serious.

Once bleach and water mix the bleach starts breaking down and will dissipate in about 24 hrs.

The dose makes the poison and the solution to pollution is dilution.

The chlorine bleach is not fundamentally different that the chlorine that sterilizes your drinking water. So, does your grass die when you water the lawn or when you don't?

On the other hand:

I returned from vacation once to a green swimming pool with tree leaves and other stuff in it. A big dose of "Chlorine" (Calcim Hypochlorite which is not too different from Sodium hypochlorite) and the next AM, the organic material was all dissolved and gone!

And an entire summer of that stuff splashing over the edge and running to one concentrated spot made for some sick grass.

My answer is Murphy's law....If you are one of those who want to be on the cover of better homes and gardens, I'd be careful- dumping all that water in one spot might hurt your grass.

But, if you are content to have a few weeds, etc., I'd put my beer money on it not being a problem.

The other posters are largely correct that the stuff mostly breaks down from chemical proceses, but too much sodium isn't the best thing for your lawn either.

I did this last year. I kind of forgot that I had my hose draining on my lawn. Needless to say it did not kill the grass but I did have a nice patch of white grass for a long time! This was even after I realized my mistake and watered down that area after it happened.
