We took delivery of our new 09 Holiday Rambler Scepter at the factory in OR. and plan to keep it out of state (CA) for at least 91 days. Besides keeping lodging, food and gas receipts, does one need to log a certain amount of miles?

I just did this last March and it was a pretty simple process. The BOE is not concerned with how many miles you travel during that time. Just keep all of your receipts. I also would not stay in any one state for more than 30 days to avoid a potential use tax. The BOE was actually very helpful and pleasant to deal with.

I met a California couple that took out of state delivery on their Alpine Coach. They had some severe problems with it and took legal action under the California Lemon Law. Alpine's defense: "Sorry, California Lemon Law doesn't apply - you took delivery in Arizona."

I'm not being negative about out of state delivery - I wish that I had done it. Just an interesting anecdote.

It's not where you took delivery. It's where your residents is and where you registered it.

You might want to give ca. dmv a call. I think you have to buy it in Ca. and then have it taken out of state !!! You might of done t backwards you bought out of state and you are going to have to facethe Ca. dmv when you get here!! It will not be pretty. The Ca.dealers license the rv before it leaves the state of Ca. and te dmv fees are already paid. good luck you will need it and a check blank. rvtommy

Yeah, but the reason that California residents take out-of-state delivery is to try and avoid paying sales tax.
I would like to see Arnold close this loop-hole rather than cut back on other public services such as closing State Parks and reducing the benifits to the disabled.

Set yourself up a log book. In it, keep a daily diary as to where you were, how much you spent along with receipts attached. Keep any receipt that you get for anything, fuel, groceries, campground, etc. We even turned in a receipt for panty hose. Arrange the log in such a way that if you have to make copies it will be easy to do so in the event that you are ask for proof of the out of state period.

We purchased and took out of state two coaches while we lived in CA. One we never heard from BOE. The second we got the "prove it" letter. All we did was make a copy of our log and mailed it to them, case closed.

One word of advise, and if you don't do anything else I say, do this: DO NOT TALK TO DMV CONCERNING THE TAX ISSUE. They are a collection agency only, they have nothing to do with enforcement. If you have questions about the tax issue, contact the BOE office in Redding. They do the out of state thing all the time and know the situation.

I bought my Journey in AZ, took delivery in CA and received a 12 month drive out tag for just a few dollars. 8 months later I registered it in TN.
