Friends of ours remove their rear plate as soon as they enter Mexico and put the front plate on the rear. This is because our Provincial "Tags" are on the rear plate and that is the one the cops take from you if you have any encounter with them. If they loose your plate then you can still get back home.

You may get out of a ticket anyway. Not sure. But, if you want to avoid any chance of that type of hassle, get a vanity plate of some sort. We have RVNS4US plates both front and rear.

The extra cost is small in comparison to what they jack you for registration.

This whole thread is almost silly. I would like to hear from someone who has had his plate taken while he was stopped by a transito. I doubt there will be a response. Your plate could be stolen while parked on a street. Your plate could be taken by a transito while it is parked on the street. But never when you are stopped by the police. In over 20 years of travelling we have never lost a plate nor has any police officer tried to take a plate. Nor have I ever spoken to a person who has personally lost a plate. Sounds like an urban legend to me. We do not leave our unit unattended on any street in a large city as you could lose more than a dumb plate!

I also doubt that this is a problem for anyone in Mexico. I did recently go through a check point on the outskirts of Merida, they were specifically checking for current plates and registration according to the sign. He started to stop me because I don't have a plate on the front (even though my state Calif does issue and require them) but he walked to the back, saw the Calif plate and told me I could go. I took the front plate off only because it is a draw to teenagers looking for wall art. I figured if I lost one plate, I could use the 2nd.

We were on a bus tour in Mexico close to 20 years ago now. The bus driver double parked in front of the Hotel in Hermosillo and lost a plate off the bus to the transitos. That eventually meant a trip for all the inmates on the tour to the cop shop so the driver could get the plate back.

I have never heard about it happening to anyone else & I seriously doubt that tourists are targetted. We've had single plates for years and nobody has ever noticed that I am aware of. They get way more excited about the block heater cord hanging out the front. Now they probably think its some kind of hybrid vehicle but it used to attract a lot of attention.

If it happens once it is a problem,

If it happens twice it is a crime wave...

Been traveling to Mexico for over 38 years and totally agree. This thread is not almost silly, it is silly!

Not having a front plate

on your vehicle

is the least of anyone's

problems in Mexico...

If I were a newbie traveller to Mexico after reading this thread I would get out my MIG welder and weld that sucker right to the bumper!!! If we spend all of our time worrying about: bribes, cheating at the Pemex, Transitos that take plates and dirty cops then maybe we are visiting the wrong country, I think it is time to relax, get out a cold Sol and worry about important things.
