Got a friend who, several years ago, withdrew IRA money before retirement age and didn't bother paying the taxes on it. And he did this more than once. Also, has not filed income tax (small income) for the last 4 years. He's making a decent income in 2008 and will be filing April 2009.

He's scared to death to come forward to the IRS and clear this up as he figures he owes $200,000. I keep telling him it's not going to be pretty if they come after you. A retired accountant gave him advice to file in 2009 and just wait and see if anything happens. He says there's a chance the IRS will have let this one slip through the cracks, and there's a 10 year statute of limitations on this stuff.

What say you?

Unless, He was in a coma for the last 5 years, He deserbes every thing the IRS can dish out. He Lied and cheated. To benefit himself. What part of not filing income tax and the IRA penalty did he not get?

WHY do I have to pay my taxes on time if he does not?

I'm pretty sure that doesn't answer the OP's question.

I know a fellow who didn't file for his refund every year for about 10 years because he owed child support and knew his ex would get the refund. When he finally did file she got the refunds and he got the penalties and fines for failure to file for however many years it was.

with the IRS ya aint gonna beat them out of anything. They will collect.

I don't think what you paid would have been any less had he paid what he should have. In truth... you covered for no one.

However... The IRS WILL gets its fair share from him one way or another.

Too bad the local prosecutor didn't go after him for willful failure to pay the child support and put him in jail. The child support enforcement agencies can be more ruthless than the IRS when it comes to deadbeats.

I don't think this is completely true, other than yes this one deadbeat tax payer probably didn't make that much of a difference. But if nobody cheated on their taxes for just one year the government would probably have enough revenue to pay off much of the national debt. So the rates that us good tax payers pay has as a built in factor how much the cheats don't pay. So those of us who do pay are paying extra because of those that don't pay.

That has not been the experiences of the folks I know who are entitled child support. It seems no one cares when a deadbeat stops making payments. All they have to do is move out of state and the enforcement stops.

They need to move to California then. That is one thing that California does right. Or at least does pretty good.
