The people we bought it from did show us how everything worked -- but as this is our very first motor home, no matter how much you read before hand or someone tells you how things work, you really need to just go out and try it. We have had some delays in trying it as my husband has taken ill. We hope labor day weekend he'll be better so that we can go out. (If we can make reservations somewhere!)
I would like to suggest some great books for newbies like us -- The RVer's Bible by Kim and Sunny Baker has a great chapter called "Checklist and Procedures: Setting Up and Breaking Camp". I also like The Complete Idiot's Guide to RVing (2nd edition). Both these books have great chapters on what to pack.
Thanks to everyone's suggestions, we have decided to take I-40 across the country. We just hope that the trip down I-81 to get to I-40 will be snow free.
Thanks again for all your help!

To use a famous movie quote, a bit paraphrased from "Blazing Saddles",
"We don't need no stinking books!"
You have us folks at RV.Net to help you out with any newbie issues!
Congratulations and keep us posted, send us pics!

My suggestion is for the first camping trip be to Camp Driveway. You will learn a lot.
p.s. When you go through Memphis, wave.
