Depending on options, the Megacab 2500 CTD 4WD has a payload of about 1450 lbs. If you have passengers, some stuff in the bed, you basically may have nothing left for tongue weight, per the tags. May or may not bother you. Quad cab gets you about another 1000 lbs of payload, if you can live with the room.

I have the MC drw and I do not agree with the above statement. The back seats are firm but very comfortable IMO. It is the best traveling truck on the market today. I have 2 teen boy and we all love the truck for it's room and comfortable ride. I came from a GM 4 door and it's very small compared to the MC. We have traveled from Texas to Yellowstone and to Florida in two summers and this trucks works great for our family.

sorry I do not agree either. It's the only vehicle I have had where I have never heard complaints from the back seat...

Just saying, try it out. Don't let the looks fool you. The seat just did not come far enough under the knees and I hated the way it felt. I have had others agree. To each their own. It is going to feel different to every person that sits in it. Plus, getting out of the back seat was a pain. Where the front door meets the back door is just in the wrong spot.
After you have tried the mega, if you like it, then it is for sure the truck for you. Just not for me and some others.

This sounds more like a Quad Cab? Which is basically an extended cab with 4 real doors instead of the traditional door and a half.

I sincerely wish you luck on the 20k off deal. I spent the last 2.5 weeks beating on the dealers within 70 miles of home. Best deal was the local dealer. $10k off (21%) a 3500 4x4 6.7L Lonestar and $12k off (32%) a 1500 4x4 Hemi Lonestar.

Wow what a statement.
I have over 50,000 long distance miles on my Megacab and have had all kinds of people back there - even a couple that own a late model GMC crewcab and everyone from teenagers to my 6 ft 4 inch friend rave about the rear cab comfort. Leg room, reclining seats, behind the seat storage - best in class.

Great discussion here and I appreciate the feedback. I am actually glad this did not turn into yet another Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge discussion.
I have a few more questions -
- the payload question is a concern now, I might need to check into the 3500 for that matter as suggested by TROLL. I occasionally have to carry 6 people and two big dogs plus whatever on the bed plus a 1000 lbs from the trailer
- I understand the comments from MIKE but I sat there for 15 minutes and personally think the back seats are the best seating option compared to other options (...and I don't have to sit there anyway)
- do all oth the diesls have the exhaust break or is this an option that I have to order. This is a real plus...
- There seems to be a favor for the older Cummins (no "g" - I am learning) and from an engineering perspective it makes sense that a 5.9L is more efficient than a 6.7L. Should I try to find a good, low milage used one rather than buying a new truck?
- the $20k is a marketing trick, although the website says $20k off MSRP they will up-sell you some extras to place you right back where you started. Overall it equates to ~ 12k off MSRP
Thanks for the comments on the mirrors.

So not true. The mileage on a diesel is so much better compared to the Hemi that it is shameful. Have towed with a Hemi and a CTD and no need to comment any further.
As to the price difference. Not true either...especially compared to the Hemi. In addition, the price difference is made at resale every time.
I'm thinking you haven't priced used diesels lately, much less used trucks.

can't speak to other brands, but here is the scoop on Dodge...
6.7 has exhaust brake functionality through variable vane turbo, not via exhaust brake. not sure if it is available by default, or if they sell you the functionality as an option. eg turn it on..
As for the 5.9l, just about any Dodge 5.9l all the way back can run anEB, with a manual tranny.. you could run the mopar brake (made by Jacobs engineering), or go pacbrake or others.. the mopar brake is warrantied by Dodge
with an auto tranny, there are limitations if you want warranty support... Not sure about 2nd and 1st gen with EB and auto tranny, but with the 3rd gen 48re tranny this is it...
04 not supported
05 not supported, supposedly due to a thrust washer... they were supposed to make it happen, but Dodge never delivered the SW.
06/early 07 with 5.9l, supported and integrated with cruise control. Mopar brake warrantied for 3yr/36k by Dodge.
there are aftermarket lockup kits to make an EB work with any combo, but you become your own warranty station.
