Thank you all for all the valuble feedback. I plan on calling my tech to come and fix it, will watch him, and know how to do it myself next time. I now know the general issues regarding the landing gear setup and can ask the questions necessary to learn as much as I can. The Atwood picture was particularly helpful. My only continuing question is how to get to the shearpin. Is there just one, or does each leg have one? If that is the problem I could fix it myself if I knew how to get to it.

Just had the same problem with our landing gear...in our case the pin didn't shear. The bolt just came loose and fell out...found it in the cargo bay.

Before replacing/re-installing make sure to even out the legs so that they operate together...very simple fix!

If your legs act together you will have one motor that runs one leg with a bar which runs from the motor side to the non-motor side. There actually is a pin on both sides. In our case the pin below the motor is the one that fell out. You should be able to look inside the compartment and see the motor...you will then see the bar which runs to the other side. Check both connection points of the horizontal bar, that is where the "pins" will be. You simply line up the holes and replace the pin...

We will check the pins on a regular basis from now on. Good Luck!

I'll bet the "pins" are just regular bolts that you can get at any hardware store. Just remove the good one and take it with you so you can find one approximately the same size. I got a couple extras and taped them to the leg assembly on the motor side. Mine have nylon-sleeved lock nuts on them which makes them unlikely to come loose and fall out. If yours don't have these types of nuts, I'd definitely suggest an upgrade. Make sure you get a regular cheap bolt and not a grade 8 tempered bolt. If the bolt is too strong, it may not sheer off when needed and that could cause problems with the motor and/or jack assembly. This is an easy fix and you'd probably be better off doing it yourself because the next time it happens there may not be a tech available.

I went out today and bought some #2 bolts and nuts. Replaced broken shearpin with them and all seems to be working well. I made sure that both legs of the landing gear were even. I plan to replace the nuts with the nylon ones. With all the great advice I am now able to do maintenance on more thing on our trusty old 1999 Avion Fifth Wheel.

Glad everyone's advice gave you the confidence to make the repair on your own...isn't it liberating not to be completely dependant on the dealer???
