Our son is in college at University of Concordia in Irvine CA. We are thinking of camping in the area at Christmas. Maybe at Huntington Beach or Bolsa Chica campgrounds (If they are not booked already). Any information on them would be appreciated. Or any other nearby campgrounds.

You better book them soon if it's not already too late. I prefer Bolaa Chica because Huntington Beach is right in town with more noise. There is still a lot of highway noise at Bolsa.
If you are too late there is Huntington by the sea and also The Newport Dunes a bit further south but it's a bit expensive.
Soneone on the forum stayed at a campground around Seal Beach but I don't know the name if it.

Thank you for the recommendation. Went ahead and made the reservations. Will have to leave the day after Christmas and not stay on any of the weekend days. But actually got a site on the beach side.

We were there earlier this year. Take a look at my review on RV Park Reviews.

Huntington Beach is actually kinda far from Irvine.

Newport Dunes is only about 5-7 miles from UC Irvine. It is near Jamboree and Pacific Coast Highway.

To go from Bolsa Chica to Irvine, one way is to take Pacific Coast Highway south to the 55 freeway, then northeast to highway 73, then southwest to UC Irvine.

Another way is to take Goldenwest north to Warner, then east about 2 miles to I405, then southeast to the campus.

Another way would be to take Pacific Coast Highway all the way south to Jamboree, then north towards the campus.

We also have a son that teaches in LA. So we are going to make them drive to visit us at the beach.

Thanks appreciate the advice. Did grow up in Santa Barbara so I know the weather. Went to college in San Diego and visited LA a lot. Just didn't camp then.

Hey, what happened to the rest of my post?? Yikes! Meant to add that at this time of year the wind can come up off the ocean in the evenings and really put a chill in you. Plus with the fog (marine layer) it can freeze you to the bone at night. Make sure your heater is working properly. Also you might have a chance of rain although not a lot. Or since this is california it could be 90% and you'll need to run your A/C. Don't you just love it here! Happy camping!
