For the last few days I have been searching for a 2008 2500 Duramax 2 WD, crew cab GMC truck that I want for a long time thru surfing online and found one. But problem is it is in California. I am in PA. Now my question is have anyone experience bought a truck from out of state? Wondering about sales tax? State inspection which require in PA. Do you have someone drive the new truck or have it bring thru train? I was told that I should not have any problem around here if truck needs to be fixed. (3 years bumper to bumper warranty) But I remember someone mentioned about it and had problem with local dealer because he did not buy truck from local. Any help you can give, would be greatly appreciated it. Thanks!

Depending on what kind of deal you can swing it might be to your advantage to fly to CA and drive it back home. As far as state inspections, you will need to get that done before you can license it. And pay the states sales tax to boot. If you can get a temp you should be able to get it out of the CA dealers lot with the temp and without paying any CA sales taxes. But best to talk to the dealer first about that issue.

When you purchase out of state you need to get a transit tag from the state where the vehicle is sold. Then you register it in your home state. When you register you pay state sales tax and you will need to go for an inspection. Details will vary by state but that's basically how it worked for me to buy in NY and bring to NJ and in Ohio and back to NJ and sell in NJ to someone in PA.

I bought my truck in St. Louis and drove it back to CA. It saved me a bunch of money. I just flew out, picked up the truck and started driving back the same day. They gave me a temporary tag to drive it back, then I paid the taxes when I registered it in CA. It was very easy and straightforward.

I have bought 5 Trucks out of State 1 in Colorado and 4 in Alabama, I have used a Transit Tag or drive out tag until I return to Tennessee and then pay the Tax and put Tennessee tags on. Some States require you to pay some tax but Tennessee has always took that off. As for repair, GM warranty is good at many different locations. But our last 5 GM Trucks have only had to have warranty work done less than 6 times. Remember the Duramax/Allison is a proven combo and doesn't have to have very many repairs. However some are having problems with the new DPF systems, I have had none so for. Did have to return for CEL because of the remote start. You will be fine with the GM Truck. Good Luck. GBY....

How would the CA emissions requirements affect this situation? Would the OP be paying more for something he doesn't need?

Dealers will vary on their attitude about where you bought the truck. Some are just happy to have you come in and will work with you to try and win you over for all services and possibly a sale the next time you are in the market. Other dealers will give you a hard time. Just find the dealer that wants your business and use them.

As for buying out of state, as stated, it varies state by state. I bought in ID and drove back to WA. The dealership collected the sales tax, issued a temp tag and everything was cool in WA, just had to pay the license fees.

Being a truck over 8600# GVWR it is not classed as a "Light-Duty" vehicle so I think the emissions are the same for all 50 States.
I have bought two cars out of State - one from Georgia and one from Illinois.
Both processed the same way - temp tag (10 day or 30day, depends on the State) to drive home, then pay your State taxes when your register it when you get home.
Can't answer the question about inspections - none in MI.
Your Chev or GMC dealer should have no problem doing warranty work. If they balk it's time to phone GM Customer Assistance.

Yep, temporary transit tags will get you home. You will pay tax in your state. If you're buying it from a private party you won't really even need the temp tag. Private sellers don't charge tax, we just have you sign the transfer paper to clear our name off the title. Just don't get pulled over on the way home or they may want to see your transit tag.
As far as smog equipment, you know you will be able to pass your state if it cleared the Peoples Republic of California laws. I'm not even sure there is extra equipment on Cali diesels.

I bought my TT in Iowa, got a transit tag for two weeks but ended up taking my time going home so I was out for a month, no problems. It sat in my yard for another three weeks till I went to DMV. They didn't care, just wanted to know when it got to Cali and how much I spent so they could get thier tax.
