I'm thinking about fastening a few simple brackets on the rear bumper and rolling the carpet on a 3/4" stick of PVC pipe. All stuff around the house now. Maybe a simple crank and PRESTO. The whole thing rolls up on the "spit". Add a couple bungee cords to keep it rolled up, and it's done. I don't think the rain should matter - it's all-weather carpet. For sun exposure, I could cover the roll with some plastic if necessary.
I also thought about rolling the carpet up on a PVC tube, and making brackets to hold the rolled assembly up under the trailer. My problem with the 6" PVC tube besides the cost is our carpet is longer (thus larger) than the pipe ID when rolled up.

Our woven mat from the camping store came with a plastic zipper bag. DH sweeps the mat, shakes out best he can and folds it into the bag. When we get home, part of the cleanup is to put the mat out and spray it down with the hose. Left in the sun to dry and then refolded into the bag.

Okay, so now I'm NOT THINKING about anything except getting a new mat/carpet at a camping store that has a bag, or one that the sand falls through. All of your suggestions have been great. I just wish I hadn't spent the $30 on the carper at Menards already.

mats made for camping will be much easier for you as far as cleaning, storage, mildew resistance
an alternative to getting the bags made for mat storage from such stores is the heavy but inexpensive bags sold in some stores and in many catalogs and online as bags for storing outside chair cushions and the like. (ours is about 10 years old now and is green tarp type material with zipper and handles) we have used one of those for years, the big patio mat folds up , goes in this waterproof bag and gets bungied on the battery tray next to the battery

we bought our 9x12 awning mat from awningmats.com for around $69. and it came with a 4' duffel bag to store it in.
this is a lot easier than making a storage tube/box to attach to the trailer and it cleans easily and weighs about 10lbs.

We are too cheap to make up a storage tube etc. And I'm not a fan of putting a sandy or dirty rung into a bag. So we have a length of 1 inch PVC capped on both ends that we use as a center to roll the rung around. Then just stuff it between the spare tire support and the read of the trailer then bungie it to the bumper.
When we get home I shake it out, roll it back up and stand it in the corner of the garage. I just takes a minute to load on the rear when it's time for the next trip.

Throw it in the back of the truck. It's a truck bed. A little sand will not hurt. Save the worrying for the big stuff.

We have one of the larger awning mats ?9x18? (the vinyl dirt/water/sand filtering kind) and after sweeping it off and folding it up we put it into one of those Ziploc or Hefty extra large storage bags. It fits in fine and I'm still able to "zip" it shut.
