As in the sig, we're moving to WY. Lots of open space (and lots more miles on the truck each year). Our 8.1 is great here in CA, where we don't go more than a few miles a week for work or play. But we'll be putting on more miles when we move, and I'm thinking it's time for the diesel. Here's the question:

Local dealership has a new 2007 4X4 Ram 3500 ST (base model) SRW long bed, 6-spd manual CTD with the 6.7. We don't mind the manual windows, doors, etc. MSRP is $42,500, they're offering it for a little under $29K, which is right at our max price. From looking on here, that seems a reasonable price - not amazing, but pretty good. Any opinions? This will be our last truck for a long long long time, and will be primarily for towing a flatbed/horse trailer once in a while, towing our 5th wheel, and 4-6 trips to visit family about 500 miles away. Probably about 15-20 K per year. The dealer won't budge on the price, he even suggested we go try Dave Smith in Idaho for a better deal so I believe he's doing his best - $100 over invoice, plus dealer cash, maybe a military rebate too. Carmax has some great prices on used Rams, but for the new/used difference by the time I add in an extended warranty and higher rate, it's close to the same price.

They're offering about what I figured for our trade (not much!), we went to Carmax and had them appraise it and it came out the same. Any opinions are welcome!

Is that a CA truck? Before you sign on anything, do a web search especially ebay motors and Dave Smith Motors in Kellogg,ID for some comparisons. Seems kinda high for a stripper to me.

My suggestion is wait until you get to Wyoming to buy a rig. I bet you'll be able to find what you want and buying local can be a good thing. Have a smooth move

Having made the move the from Cali, I would wait and get your truck once you have moved.

I would never buy an ST model. You may think you can live without electric windows, but you will go crazy!!!!

I would hold off on buying in Cali. Wyoming is the biggest seller of trucks per person and you will find what you want there.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'm waiting for a call back from Dave Smith, they may be close. However, I've checked with a couple in WY and no one can match it.
To answer the questions:
Yes, it's a Cali truck - but shouldn't be any different from any other?
So far no dice on any WY dealer being lower - I've tried Cowboy Dodge in Cheyenne, and will try a couple more. We will need to trade ours in, so Ebay is not an option. So far every other dealer is out of 07s, and the 08s are about $5K too much.

Maybe I should rephrase -
We have about $29K to spend if we decide to buy a new truck. We can either buy a new 07 stripped truck, but otherwise what we want (long bed, 4X4, 6spd stick) or a used one with more options for the same price.

We're leaning toward a new one, because we'd rather put money into the truck than interest and an extended warranty for a used one - but is this faulty logic?

We've gone through too many vehicles recently, and this will be our final truck for several years. I'd rather take a stripped model and put the extra $ toward a nicer car for my wife's in a couple years, it seems wrong for me to have all the bells and whistles on my work truck at the expense of a better car for her.

I agree, wait till you go to WY to buy the truck. Why pay California sales tax and emissions and higher registration if you don't have to? Those things are probly alot cheaper in WY. I know if I was going to move back to AZ and buy a new truck, I sure as heck wouldn't buy it here in CA!

I disagree with waiting!! When you can get a new vehicle that you are happy with at nearly half price, you don't pass it up and gamble on getting the same deal later. I really didn't need a new truck now but I will when the house sells "UUGGGG" I'm going fulltime so I could not pass up paying $28000 for my truck "see signature" the msrp was $45,490 yes it was a new 2007.5.

I prefer to buy local, simply because I've had bad experiances trying to get warrenty service from other than selling dealer. Not always an issue but often enough that I'm willing to spend a little more. IMHO, wait until you have moved.

As long as you can live with the manual windows, etc. of the St model, then go for it. The 6.7 CTD will have the same emissions whetehr you buy it in CA or WY. It sounds like a great price to me. But to be sure, have Dave Smith give you a quote on the same equipped truck. Then you will know if the CA dealer's price is all that great.

Please let us know the final outcome!
