55 mph is also the max speed limit for any vehicle towing a trailer in California.

On our return trip (10,000 km) from Vancouver Island to Toronto last year we averaged 11.5 IMPG, based on total distance driven divided by total fuel consumed (hand calc). Average hwy speed was 60 mph.

Truck is 2004.5 3500 RAM CTD QC SB Auto 4x4 3.73 gears.
5er is 10,000# and 12' high.

Take a look at our rig (profile) and you will see another barrier(!) to good mileage (picture taken during a stop on the trip, east of Sault Ste. Marie).

I have a Dodge Quadcab CTD 1T SRW auto tranny and also had a Dodge Quadcab3/4T SRW 6 speed manual and tow the same Alfa with both with a GCWR of 19,450#. I now get a pretty consistent 12 MPG towing. The 3/4T had 3.55 rear end gears and the 1T has 3.73. I was overweight with the 3/4T and used 5th gear a lot to get about 10-11 MPG towing.

Mine is pretty consistent with other posts. Around 12 while towing and around 20 when solo. Depends on wind, hills, and how hard I mash on the pedal. I cruise 65 on the highway.

I get around 11.5 to 12.5 with a 2001.5 2500 4x4 Reg cab towing an aprox 12K tall (12'8.5") 5er. 4.10 gears, and auto and like to tow at 2000 RPMs at 63 MPH. Cummins is mildly bombed. Custom towing tranny and exhaust brake. Love it! Chris

12mpg at 65mph in my 06. 5er is 12'4" tall, pushing air is harder than the weight.

I get between 10 to 13.5 mpg pulling a 12k lb 12'heigh 5r with my 07 1/2 Dodge 6.7, 6 speed auto and 410 gears as long as I stay around 60 to 65 mph. Can safely pull 800 miles due to the added 40 gal in bed tank and my stock 34 gal tank. Saves me having to get fuel with 5r in tow or allows me to buy when prices are lower.

With almost 13K in tow, I'm running 12 to 12.5 mpg, 60-62 mph, on a trip from Dover to Shipshewana to Niagra Falls and back to Dover. My around town will sometimes see 18. This is with a 2004.5 3500DRW and 4.10's on a A/T.
