Hi, we went to the RV show in Fort worth this past weekend, not really expecting to find anything(big mistake), but we did find a trailer that we would like to trade up for. Now heres the problem, we bought our trailer new and have never sold or traded in one before. They showed us some Nada book that listed our trailer at a really low price, they say that they will not pay anything for options either, even though we have all the options on our trailer, which I think added 3000 or 4000 to the price new.

Needless to say we did not take them up on their offer. I came home and punched in the numbers through the online Nada and it shows to be quite a bit more.

We have a 2006 26RS Rockwood Roo with all options except storm windows. They offered 10600. trade-in. The computer shows Low retail at 16935 with options(12270 without), and High retail with options at 20445 and without 14780.

I would love to hear about any of your experiences since we are really newbies regarding this matter.

Thanks in advance..

I'm in the same boat with my Starcraft, the trade-in offer was about $10,000 with similar results when searching NADA. If you do a search on the forum you'll find that the low NADA without options is usually the best you'll get.

In my case, my wife wants to do a private sale and get more money but honestly I don't want the hassle. It will come down to how badly I want the new trailer we're interested in. Right now we've spent so much time analyzing the deal that we haven't done anything: "paralysis by analysis." Not sure how we're going to proceed.

Good Luck with your decision.

A couple of things.

I have found that the NADA guides are 10 to 20% over valued. By that I mean you can buy the car, truck or RV for 10 to 20% below the NADA prices.

A dealer is not going to give you retail value. A dealer needs to make a profit on selling your trailer. If they give you a retail value then what price are they going to charge the customer who buys your old trailer? NADA retail value plus?

between the wholesale trade-in value they may offer you, and the retail value you THINK it is worth, is called MARGIN.

From MARGIN, you will need to subtract salesman commission, repairing anything broken, marketing and advertising, storage until it sells, and cost of tying up funds until traded-in unit sells. This is their justifiable argument to offer you an absolute minimum.

You ALWAYS come out better selling privately, but, as stated, is rarely worth the hassle. Dealears know this and take advantage of it. Being offered $500 for a $2500 automobile is not uncommon when you trade cars, so, why is being offered 1/5th of a camper's value surprising.

I've been studying the same. We have had some really good trade offers, but you have to watch... all they do is take less off the new unit you are trying to buy.

From what I hear tell, NADA is overpriced to inflate values for insurance companies, and to get the banks to offer more lending on used trailers... for what THAT'S worth.

Your example shows why NADA is a joke and only good for dealers to charge inflated prices for used trailers.

You should have been able to pay less than $16,9325 for an '06 Roo 26RS when it was new! (Unless you paid MSRP for it.) You really can't expect it to be worth a couple of thousand dollars more three years later. A new 2009 Roo 25RS, fully loaded, is $16,000 in Ohio for example (freight to TX might add $1000, certainly no more than $2000 and this is a 2009, not 2006). Our '06 Roo 23SS is NADAed the same way -- more than I paid for it new. ($14,500 with everything including storm windows.)

The realistic selling price is the Low NADA without any "options" as this accounts for the real original selling price at well below MSRP. In your case it's $12,300 or so, that's all a private buyer will probably pay -- but the dealer won't, he buys at wholesale and sella at retail.

But trade-ins are a shell game the dealer always wins if you play the game. High trade-in = low-discount.

Get a cash price for the new trailer. MSRP is at least 30% mark-up as many dealers will sell at this discount and still make money.

Having worked on a credit union credit committee for quite a few years I know that trading VS selling a used trailer or auto for that matter is generally a loosing proposition for the person trading in. NADA generally gives an average retail, average trade in and average loan value for each vehicle. No dealer cares what you paid for yours X years ago, only what they can make on the deal. They will cover the deal with smoke and mirrors to make you feel better and try to give you a guilt trip if you are too cheap to pay a few $$$ more when it is no reflection on them that they are doing the same thing to you. If you reach an agreement they are always the winners. I understand that they would be out of business if they could not make money and I expect them to, but I have been looked straight in the eye and lied to too many times as a buyer and as a trader you are working in the blind coming and going. If you have a clean trailer and you are not upside down in your current financing you can advertise it and sell it, coming out much better, and then go and buy what you want. If you elect to trade then happiness is getting screwed the way you like it!

From what I've seen (never done) trailers will go fast on craigslist if the price is right. Put whatever price you want on it and give it a whirl, what's the worst that can happen, it doesn't sell?

hi,

Yes craigslist rocks! We just sold our 2003 Rockwood Roo 21 for $7800. We asked $8500 and set a low price of $8000, so we were happy with the $7800. We saw a local dealer listing the same year/model for $11k. Our trailer had more options than the dealers: weight dist hitch, cover, ... be sure to point out all of that in an ad, also take and offer to send additional pictures to get potential buyers hooked.

We took the extra $ (a dealer offered us $5k) got an excellent price from rvdirect.com and got into a 2009 trailer for the same $ the dealer wanted for a 2 year old trailer.

Good luck.

Vinny
