I am glad you are recovering well, let this be a warning to all who would do things that a marginally unsafe. Safety must be our first priority, no amount of fun is worth getting injured over or injuring someone else due to our negligence or ignorance. For all those who ridicule those people that point out potential pitfalls in towing set ups, you know the ones who throw the weight police names around, there is a good reason for the caution demonstrated bythose folks.

So sorry to hear of your incident.
When I picture it in my minds eye, I just can't figure out how or why your finger would be under the hitch so it could be caught in between. I too have a 21' HTT and my fingers never get that low. I only touch the top latch. I would see no need for me to have them that low.
I understand things like that happen quickly, and it can be hard to recall exactly your steps prior to it especially when you do this procedure often.
Glad your recovery went well. Happy camping!

It took me a bit of thinking because I couldn't imagine having a hand under the coupling, but I'm guessing he had his finger IN the little latch on the coupling.

To the OP, ow, and thanks for the heads up.

Thank you very much for sharing this story! Being very new to this I have been unsure of how the whole latch even works and have had my fingers up under and feeling to see if it was seated, etc. Didn't think twice about it ... I sure as heck will now!

A few of you asked how my finger could be anywhere near where it was for this accident to happen. It happened pretty quick, but if I remember correctly, the ball looked to be all the way seated in the hitch and I had moved on to the next piece which was attaching the chains and locking the hitch. I remember resting my hand on the hitch for support as I leaned from the left side of the trailer to reach the chain on the right side. Pure logic and safety would say dont ever put your finger in such a dangerous area. And thats my point to all of you. Just because you have loaded a trailer 1000+ times before, dont go into autopilot when going through routine steps. I would like to think im a safe and smart guy, but I made a stupid mistake because I wasnt focused due to this process becoming too routine.

Ouch!

It would have hurt more if your brother-in-law was watching.

Seriously, Sorry to hear about your misadventure and thanks for sharing.

We do some stupid stuff every now and then. Last week my friend was building a carport over his motorhome when he reached out to far and fell off his ladder. Falling off the ladder was bad, but it gets worse. He had to trim a Crape merttle tree to have room for his carport. When he fell he landed on the cut ends of the tree. He was impalled and hanging in the air. He has had 4 surgeries so far. While he was hanging in the air he told his wife he might as well have a cigar while waiting for help to arrive. The had to cut the limb and leave it in him while he was transported by helecopter to the hospital 60 miles away.

I did something similar (to soon old to late smart) While unhooking the ball didn't drop out to the trailer. So, dumb me, I put my foot between the ball and the bumper and pushed down. The trailer lurched forward and caught my foot between the trailer and the bumper. There I was with one foot in the air and one on the ground and it hurt like hell. Stood there for a half an hour till my wife came to check on me. Thank god I didn't hurt it too bad. Boy, did my wife give me hell. By the way, I always remember to block the wheels now.
